O culto das reliquias é considerado na actualidade por moitas persoas como una supervivencia do pasado que só se pode manter viva gracias á práctica da liturxia; e sobre todo gracias á existencia das peregrinacións, fenómenos relixiosos, culturais e políticos á vez. Somentes o catolicismo, entre as relixións vivas do cristianismo occidental, mantén ese culto, pero insistindo en que nel non se trata de adorar uns obxectos ou restos humanos senón a memoria dun santo ou santa consagrados seguindo os procedementos regulados polo dereito canónico dende a Edade Media. O recoñecemento da autenticidade das reliquias tiña que ser feito cos protocolos canónicos que permitisen comprobar a existencia histórica da persoa que ía ser obxecto de culto, así como os feitos senlleiros da súa vida, milagres e normalmente tamén da súa morte, case sempre no martirio. Estas investigacións eruditas, baseadas nos textos e nos monumentos, tentaban frear moreas de intereses locais, rexionais, e a veces tamén nacionais, que levaban a falsificar moitas reliquias, porque todas elas eran fontes de prestixio relixioso e político e daban moitos beneficios económicos. Neste libro pode verse un estudo completo a nivel europeo da orixe das reliquias, moi unida ás persecucións contra os cristiáns no Imperio Romano, das que se fai un detido estudo histórico-relixioso e xurídico. Partindo de eses comezos, estúdanse os procedementos canónicos de recoñecemento do valor das reliquias, a súa conservación , e incluso o intercambio delas, normalmente ofrecidas como regalos. Non pode haber reliquia sen santo, e santo sen vida ou sen historia que contar, e por iso poderemos ver como nestes casos a historia mestúrase case sempre coas lendas, nos casos dos grandes reinos da Europa medieval. Neste libro ofrécese un estudo das lendas relacionadas coas reliquias do apóstolo Santiago, para o caso de España, pero tamén dos outros grandes patróns dos reinos europeos, como Xosé de Arimatea, protector de Inglaterra, Andrés, apóstolo e patrón de Escocia e María Magdalena, a patrona de Francia que recibiu culto en Vezelay e na Provenza, ata chegar á Revolución Francesa.
