After 30 years in Financial Services (11 of these advising clients as a Financial Planner) and as a keen student of human behavior and neuroscience, Leanda Kayess is sharing what she has learned about money and people in her books. In this book you will learn: Three recent trends in society that have big implications on how we manage money today. The ways in which the latest brain research can help us to better manage our money and teach our kids too. How to work with pocket money and allowances for young children. How kids can learn from an early age to manage money so that their essential needs are met now, and in future, so they can enjoy the rich, abundant lives we parents want for them. Schools don't teach children about money management. Many parents are not equipped to do so. This book is to assist you do just that. Preparing our children for life is our job. We cannot outsource that. We won't be here forever. At some point, our work here is done, especially with respect to preparing our children to face the world on their own. The window of opportunity to train our children will not remain open indefinitely. At some point, school is out and all we can do is hope that we did the best we could. Time flies and before you know it, they turn 18 and start to spread their wings. For parents that send their children to boarding schools, our time with them is even more limited. Our role in the lives of our children's is pretty significant. They learn from us. They don't do what we say. They do what we do. That includes the way we handle money. The subject of money is not taught in many homes. Many parents find money an uncomfortable to discuss with their children. They believe their children will pick up basic money management skills as they grow up. Many children have no idea how their parents earn income. Our parents did not teach us about money and we seem to be doing okay. We, therefore, believe our children will turn out okay. We seem to forget that our children are growing up in an age different from the one we grew up in. To raise financially literate children, we have to become financially literate ourselves. You cannot give what you don't have. A pregnant woman lets go of some habits for the sake of the wellbeing of her unborn child. In the same vein, parents need to model the behaviour or values they want to pass on to their children. Leading by personal example is much more powerful than a thousand sermons. We love our children and we want the best for them. The least we can do is to model behaviours that empower them to achieve their goals and dreams. Being financially literate is a significant component in that equation. We want our children to negotiate from a position of strength, not weakness. The time to start is while they are still young. The best place to start is home. You want to have control over what or who influences your children especially when they are at the stage of figuring out who they are. In a culture of consumerism and instant gratification, it is easy for our children to feel entitled, and spend whatever money that comes into their hands. Financial freedom is the cornerstone of other freedoms. It gives you the freedom to choose. In an entrepreneurial world where job security is gone with the wind, it is becoming more crucial for individuals to take their financial destinies in their hands rather than depend on their employers to do so. The world we grew up in no longer exists. Raising our children the way we were raised is simply preparing them for a world that no longer exists. The children are our future. We can shape that future by passing on our values and teaching them key skills to thrive in all seasons. If our job is well done, our children will not need to run back home in the future for a bailout. They will be able to stand on their two feet, thrive and make the contribution they were born to make.

Doepke and Zilibotti investigate how economic forces shape how parents raise their children. They show that in countries with increasing economic inequality, such as the United States, parents push harder to ensure their children have a path to security and success. Economics has transformed the hands-off parenting of the 1960s and '70s into a frantic, overscheduled activity. Growing inequality has also resulted in an increasing 'parenting gap' between richer and poorer families, raising the disturbing prospect of diminished social mobility and fewer opportunities for children from disadvantaged backgrounds. The authors discuss how investments in early childhood development and the design of education systems factor into the parenting equation, and how economics can help shape policies that will contribute to the ideal of equal opportunity for all. --From publisher description.

New York Times Bestseller “We all want to raise children with good values—children who are the opposite of spoiled—yet we often neglect to talk to our children about money. . . . From handling the tooth fairy, to tips on allowance, chores, charity, checking accounts, and part-time jobs, this engaging and important book is a must-read for parents.” — Gretchen Rubin, author of The Happiness Project In the spirit of Wendy Mogel’s The Blessing of a Skinned Knee and Po Bronson and Ashley Merryman’s Nurture Shock, New York Times “Your Money” columnist Ron Lieber delivers a taboo-shattering manifesto that explains how talking openly to children about money can help parents raise modest, patient, grounded young adults who are financially wise beyond their years For Ron Lieber, a personal finance columnist and father, good parenting means talking about money with our kids. Children are hyper-aware of money, and they have scores of questions about its nuances. But when parents shy away from the topic, they lose a tremendous opportunity—not just to model the basic financial behaviors that are increasingly important for young adults but also to imprint lessons about what the family truly values. Written in a warm, accessible voice, grounded in real-world experience and stories from families with a range of incomes, The Opposite of Spoiled is both a practical guidebook and a values-based philosophy. The foundation of the book is a detailed blueprint for the best ways to handle the basics: the tooth fairy, allowance, chores, charity, saving, birthdays, holidays, cell phones, checking accounts, clothing, cars, part-time jobs, and college tuition. It identifies a set of traits and virtues that embody the opposite of spoiled, and shares how to embrace the topic of money to help parents raise kids who are more generous and less materialistic. But The Opposite of Spoiled is also a promise to our kids that we will make them better with money than we are. It is for all of the parents who know that honest conversations about money with their curious children can help them become more patient and prudent, but who don’t know how and when to start.
