Outdoor Immersion And Reason written by Stuart Thompson and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-01-23 with categories.

The evidence for the critical importance of outdoor immersion for all of us is now overwhelming. This evidence has been piling up for decades. Outdoor immersion¿from dedicated gardening to distance hiking¿has been shown to enhance thinking skills, creative aptitude, curiosity building, and self esteem. Juxtapose, now, this highly positive, individual and society enhancing activity with the wish thinking associated with religious belief systems. Can outdoor immersion serve to provide an antidote to the caustic nature of superstition and religious imperialism? Can outdoor immersion provide a refuge from the irrational? Can outdoor immersion strengthen the rational and humane individual as he or she runs the gauntlet of the unfounded and absurd? Yes. Putting It Together: Finding a Way Out will first examine the evidence for the critical necessity of outdoor engagement. That foundation laid, issues of reason confronting religion, as viewed through eleven essays, will be examined. Finally and with the third major section of this work¿¿Finding a Way Out¿¿we will see demonstrated one possible mitigation of what may be termed ¿meaning bullying.¿ Using the activity hiking as an example we will see how participation therein is a clear antidote to the maddening silliness of religion. Any number of other activities could serve the same function: avid gardening in the back yard, dedicated fishing in secluded mountain streams, determined beachcombing, solitary visits to quiet outdoor scenes (in the neighborhood or in the deep wilderness), visits to a rooftop garden, reflective walks on local trails. What these outdoor activities provide is a reprieve, however temporary, from the invented meanings of some that often unnecessarily complicate the lives of others. We juxtapose some of the issues illuminated in the series of eleven essays with hiking to see how, specifically, this kind of outdoor immersion aids our psychological and intellectual rejuvenation. ¿Finding a Way Out¿ thus acquires a double meaning. On the one hand we are straightforwardly looking at the imperative of, literally, getting outside. That accomplished we then seek a way out, ideationally this time, from religious stricture, from religious imperialism.
