Excerpt from Outlines of Economics: A Syllabus for Introductory Study 1. Definition, Scope and Scientific Character of Economics. a. Definitions used at different periods of economic study reveal the change in its character. Adam Smith, 1776: Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the wealth of nations. Nassau Wm. Senior, 1836: "The science which treats of the nature, the production and the distribution of wealth." Luigi Cossa, 1877: "The science of the social ordering of wealth." Seager, 1913" "Economics is the social science which treats of that portion of human activity which is concerned with earning a living.' b. "'Money,' is the center around which economic science clusters because in this world of ours it is the one convenient means of measuring human motive on a large scale." c. Not all subjects of study are sciences. The characteristics of the sciences are ability to classify facts or phenomena in orderly arrangement; and to establish relations of sequence or cause among them. From these follow some possibility of prediction. Sciences have these characteristics in very different degrees. A TIME-SAVING, EASY AND INTERESTING WAY TO MASTER ECONOMICS IS HERE IN THIS BOOK!To many GCE “A” Level students, a number of concepts in economics are abstruse and daunting, even dry and boring. This book addresses this problem by bringing such concepts down to a “bitable, digestible and interesting” level. GCE “A” Level students and students preparing for other economics exams such as the BBA, RSA, LCCI, GRE, and even the GCE “O” Level, exams should find this book useful, interesting and reader-friendly, especially for quick revision. The book covers more than the GCE “A” Level Economics syllabus. It is not necessary to have a basic foundation in economics to pick up economics with all its abstruseness and complexities, as this book explains the ideas of economics in as simple and accessible a fashion as possible, whereby even lay people, e.g., general readers without any knowledge of economics at all, would benefit. There is a slew of very important economic knowledge and insights in the Quick Revision Notes, Articles To Stimulate Economic Reasoning and Appendix. There is also a number of useful business ideas, e.g., marketing concepts, entrepreneurship, finance and banking, etc., which should be of interest to both economics students (who are budding or potential business practitioners) and business practitioners alike. The ideas in this book are expected to stimulate, provoke, thought, interest, even controversy and debate, as economics is not an exact science - this should make economics meaningful and “come alive” (and not just another boring subject for passing exams). The author is optimistic, and, hopeful, that the implementation of these ideas would solve or, at least, alleviate our economic and social problems and greatly benefit our society. This book is also aimed at making economics not only easy and accessible, but, interesting, challenging and meaningful for everyone interested in or concerned about the economic well-being of our society, student sitting for economics exams or not!Economics is indeed important and should not be studied just for the sake of passing exams but for understanding and solving our economic and (related) societal problems as well, problems such as recession, unemployment, poverty, etc., which affect all of us one way or another whether we like it or not!THIS BOOK SERIOUSLY ADDRESSES THIS ISSUE AND, HENCE, THE IMPORTANCE, CHALLENGE AND MEANINGFULNESS OF THIS BOOK! THE BOOK, WHICH HAS NOW BEEN EXPANDED, HAS BEEN ADOPTED AS A REFERENCE TEXT BY THE INSTITUTIONS WHERE THE AUTHOR HAS BEEN TEACHING. FOR THIS NEW AND EXPANDED EDITION, THREE STIMULATING, IMPORTANT ARTICLES, "THE EFFECT OF TECHNOLOGY ON THE ECONOMY", "THE ROLE OF GREED IN THE ECONOMY" AND "WHY ECONOMICS DOES NOT SOLVE ECONOMIC PROBLEMS AND WHAT TO DO", ARE ADDED.

Excerpt from Outlines of Industrial and Social Economics For more than seventeen years the Liverpool Education Committee have provided at their Evening Continuation Schools courses in Citizenship. The syllabus covers a course of three years. In the previously published Outlines of Local Government and Outlines of Central Government, two of the three years are provided for, and the pages which follow are intended to complete the cycle. They have been prepared in collaboration by the teacher who first undertook the course, and by the teacher who has continued the work. While no attempt has been made to deal with temporary war legislation, it is hoped that the new legislation introduced into the work has been dealt with in sufficient detail for the student. The treatment of the subject is based upon the experience of both writers in the class-room. After a general introduction, an attempt has been made to follow the development of the home of the average citizen, to point out the various benefits which may result from a clear understanding of rights, and the great happiness which is the privilege of those who loyally discharge their duties. It will readily be understood that the preparation of this work from notes used in the class-room has necessitated very frequent reference to the works of many writers, impossible to detail, some of which are mentioned in the Bibliography. Our thanks are due to Professor F. Hall, M.A., Adviser of Studies to the Co-operative Union, Limited, who has revised Chapters XX and XXI. It can scarcely be hoped that so extensive a course has been dealt with without errors and omissions, and suggestions for the correction of which will be appreciated. It is hoped that the work will meet the requirements of the students of the course to be prepared in connection with the new Day Continuation Schools, of the wider studies of the University Schools of Social Studies, the Tutorial Classes for Workpeople, and be of service to the citizen in his home studies.
