Questo volume rappresenta il completamento di una ricerca attorno alla risistemazione dei confini in Europa centro-orientale al termine della Grande Guerra, compiuta nell’ambito del progetto Firb 2010 “L’Europa di Versailles (1919-1939). I nuovi equilibri europei tra le due guerre nelle fonti dell’Archivio dell’Ufficio Storico dello Stato Maggiore dell’Esercito”. Tale fase è stata centrale per la storia di molte regioni e il caso della Transilvania conferma l’importanza di questo delicato momento storico in cui si sono rivisti i confini di molti Stati europei. In qualche modo il libro si collega al precedente volume Ardeal: le origini della Transilvania romena, edito da Edizioni Nuova Cultura nel 2011, di cui prosegue l’analisi, soffermandosi sulle implicazioni del cambiamento del confine, tanto per le relazioni bilaterali fra Romania e Ungheria, quanto per la vita e il contesto socio-economico della popolazione locale.

Con l'ingresso dell'Italia nel primo conflitto mondiale i direttori dei periodici teramani affidarono al Corriere Abruzzese la pubblicazione di un Bollettino della Guerra, il cui primo numero uscì il 30 maggio 1915, con l'intento di «esaudire un voto non solo del Comitato per l'organizzazione Civile, ma della cittadinanza, desiderosa di essere tenuta sollecitamente informata dalle notizie di guerra». Inoltre il Corriere si fece promotore di un abbonamento eccezionale per i soldati, i quali potevano ricevere il periodico due volte la settimana; l'iniziativa ebbe grande successo e presto iniziarono ad essere pubblicate le numerosissime lettere che giungevano dal fronte, ed alle quali le pagine del periodico dedicò largo spazio (soprattutto nei primi due anni del conflitto) nella rubrica "Il saluto dei nostri soldati". La presente pubblicazione è un'antologia di lettere ed articoli pubblicati negli anni del conflitto. Da una parte il campo delle Digital Humanities apre nuove prospettive per studiare l'immagine della città prima, durante e dopo la guerra, dall’altro le tecnologie digitali impegnano studiosi e ricercatori di varie discipline: in particolare nell’ambito del disegno viene esplorato il ruolo della rappresentazione nella formulazione dei progetti urbani di difesa e nella documentazione degli eventi bellici e delle tracce lasciate dai conflitti, mentre nell’ambito del restauro vengono approfondite le sfide teoriche e pratiche imposte dai danni arrecati dai conflitti ai centri storici, passando in rassegna casi studio, soluzioni e dibattiti relativi alla conservazione del patrimonio urbano coinvolto in azioni di guerra, con un'attenzione particolare all'identità e alla memoria collettiva./[English]: At such a significant moment in European and world history, this volume aims to be a collection of scientific reflections about the relationships between political choices, military actions and the physiognomy of cities and the urban landscape, about the evolution of defence structures and techniques, about the representation of war and its effects on the urban image, and about the recovery of the traces of city memory. On the one hand the field of Digital Humanities opens up new perspectives to study the image of the city before, during and after the war, on the other hand digital technologies engage academics and researchers from various disciplines: In particular, in the area of drawing, the role of representation in the formulation of urban defence projects and in the documentation of wartime events and the traces left behind by conflicts is explored, while in the area of conservation, the theoretical and practical challenges imposed by the damage caused by conflicts to historic centres are explored, reviewing case studies, solutions and debates relating to the conservation of urban heritage involved in wartime actions, with a focus on identity and collective memory.

Il diario di guerra presentato in questo lavoro fu redatto sul fronte da un soldato lombardo che partecipò alla prima guerra mondiale. Nonostante l'italiano approssimativo il diario descrive con uno stile conciso il corso degli eventi vissuti in trincea, dai periodi di stasi ai giorni definiti più "spaventosi". Il diario, seppur scritto in un italiano rudimentale, è di notevole drammaticità, ed è da considerarsi di un certo interesse storico, anche perché sono pochi i contributi di questo tipo redatti da semplici soldati, a causa della scarsissima alfabetizzazione dell'epoca.
