The child labour debate, the Child Rights Convention and the target of universal primary education in the Millennium Development Goals have drawn increasing attention to children in developing countries. Alongside, a debate has waged on the need for child participation and the appropriateness of spreading allegedly western norms of childhood. This book aims to uncover the daily life of children in selected areas in Vietnam, India, Burkina Faso, Tanzania, Nicaragua and Bolivia against the background of those debates. Children, Structure and Agency takes a close look at the activities, the aspirations and the deliberations of hundreds of poor children in the age category from 9 to 14, on the basis of a dawn-to-sunset observation over a couple of days. By empowering children to make people listen to them, children can play a more an active role in their community. The book addresses the issue of such child agency and the structural constraints to that agency. This text would be of interest to child-centred development aid organisations and scholars dealing with issues of child participation, child rights, child labour and education.

Dear Parents and Teachers, You might ask, Why did we write this book for children? We have realized over the years that it is important to talk with children about difficult issues happening in the world. They do notice them, and they do worry. It is better for them when we, as the adults, bring up these issues in a safe, caring way, allowing them to express their ideas and even their fears. As many as fifteen thousand children in the United States are placed in foster care due to detainment or deportation of a parent. The placement of children in protective care usually lasts as long as the legal proceedings, which could take months. Teachers have little idea of how to work with children with these kinds of emotional challenges. At present, there is a lack of research on the specific ways that the deportation of a parent shapes the children left behind. What we do know, however, is that the separation of families under these kinds of circumstances is certain to have adverse consequences for newborns, grade-school children, and adolescents alike. As parents and educators, we can help all children understand what the children of undocumented immigrants are going through. We hope this book will help them see these children as very like them, with loving families, hopes, and dreams.

Psychopathology At School written by Valerie Harwood and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-03-26 with Education categories.

Psychopathology at School provides a timely response to concerns about the rising numbers of children whose behaviour is recognised and understood as a medicalised condition, rather than simply as poor behaviour caused by other factors. It is the first scholarly analysis of psychopathology which draws on the philosophers Foucault, Deleuze, Guattari and Arendt to examine the processes whereby children’s behaviour is pathologised. The heightened attention to mental disorders is contrasted with education practices in the early and mid-to-late twentieth century, and the emergence of a new conceptualization of childhood is explored. Taking education as a central component to the contemporary experience of growing up, the book charts the ways in which mental disorders have become commonplace in childhood and youth, from birth through to college and university, but also offers examples of where professionals have refused to pathologise children’s behaviour. The book examines the extent of the influence of psychopathology on the lives of children and young people, as well as the practices that infiltrate education and the possibilities for alternative educational responses that negate the diagnosis of mental disorder. Psychopathology at School is a must read for anyone concerned about the growing influence of psychopathology in education and will be of particular interest to educated readers and to scholars, students and professionals in education, psychiatry, psychology, child studies, youth studies, nursing, social work and sociology.
