Strategic Leadership Consultants and I conducted studies within the Washington metropolitan area in order to illustrate to readers how children are less negatively affected in a harmonious, intact family. Expert advice from psychiatrist Stanley Turecki and psychologist Cynthia Buckson along with other professionals is shared. Candid stories throughout this book support my theory that parents’ choices can affect their children, in many cases, causing long-term mental challenges. These stories further underscore the great impact parents have on their children, both positive and negative. Additionally, I provided a list of suggested topics that parents may discuss with children at different developmental stages, as well as a resource section for parents and children in crisis, or in need of information. Also, I shared a contribution to our newly elected President "Barack Obama" and how he demonstrated exemplary leadership and parental skills. Hence, The purpose of this book is to inform and motivate parents to apply the leadership strategies suggested. The strategies and case studies presented may inspire parents to develop into stronger leaders for their children.

This book is a first person narrative from a parent/community advocate. Examining my personal experiences as a parent of color in a Higher Learning Institute, I highlight some of the frustrations experienced by urban working class parents of color as they attempt to engage teachers in their community’s schools. I underscore the importance of one community organization in Los Angeles, called Parent U-Turn that works to equip novice teachers for the challenges they will face. Parent-U-Turn offers outreach strategies focused not only on improving “parenting skills” to parents but also on providing teachers with the tools and skills they need to effectively advocate and outreach to urban families and their children. I conclude by presenting seven strategies for novice teachers who want to improve and be successful in urban schools. The majority of these strategies are grounded in my own personal experiences, thus are action research based. In addition to my experiences with my own children, I draw upon my experiences working with Teacher Of America, UCLA Center X Teacher ED Program and parents in LAUSD and Lynwood USD to promote activism by parents so that their voices are heard for the benefit of low-income children. The seven stages of teacher strategies seek to create a new model and perspectives for teacher preparation programs that include all teachers in our ethnically and linguistically diverse schools/communities for the 21st Century.

This study examined Latino parent engagement through the lens of parent leaders in order to identify factors that mediate Latino parental engagement at the leadership level. Based on current research there is need to explore Latino parent leadership due to a small body of literature on this topic. This study explored the possibility that parent leaders can serve as catalysts for improving the school system and work collaboratively with district leaders to close the achievement gap for Latino students. The purpose of this study was to identify and examine why and how parents have become engaged in leadership roles in a District English Learner Advisory Committee (DELAC) in one highly successful district. This case study engaged in interviews of district leaders, parent leaders and observations taken at DELAC meetings led by parents to explore the following question: How do district leaders support or constrain the engagement of Latino parents in leadership at the district level? This study reviewed district documents as an additional data source to identify the conditions and structures that allow parents in the one target district to be intricately engaged in DELAC leadership that led to district reform efforts with the goal of increased student achievement. Latino parent progression along a developmental continuum from volunteerism to engagement was analyzed to describe optimal conditions that support parent engagement. Results of this study indicate that district commitment, dedication of resources and funds, as well as a focus on developing parent leadership skills can support and nurture the leadership skills of parents to transform them into critical leaders.

Current research offers justification for parent involvement, programs, and incentives to encourage parents to participate in schools. Relatively few studies turn to the parents themselves to study how they are participating in, thinking about, and/or contributing to schools. The opening of the first public Waldorf high school provided a rare opportunity to study parent involvement of a particular group of parents and to understand their leadership competencies, skills and abilities. Within this particular context of school reform, the current study provides a window into the process and thinking of a group of parents' envisioning of, engaging in, and implementing their plan. It also focused on their use of their leadership competencies in taking advantage of a unique opportunity within a school district. The purpose of the study was to examine the leadership competencies, skills and abilities, which sustained the parents' six-year mission and led to their success in opening a public Waldorf high school. Parents were interviewed about their roles and contributions as leaders to understand their work and also their perceptions about their leadership. Questions were designed to focus on understanding how these parents used their expertise, leadership, civic engagement, and networking to move their agenda through the Board of Education and the District leadership to successfully realize their goal. The findings of this study add to the literature about how schools engage parents and how parents can be politically or democratically active in schools. This study suggests ways for parents and educators to foster and support parents using their talents and skills as educational leaders to successfully lead an initiative and move an agenda forward. Some of these ways are through distributive leadership, ongoing learning, and responding to parent initiative. The research offers practical insights into school reform and grassroots movements.
