O uso do plural no título deste livro, Patrimónios de Influência Portuguesa: modos de olhar, visa suscitar a pluralidade dos olhares sobre um objeto que resulta da composição de muitos outros. É, digamo-lo, a proclamação de um princípio multidimensional: não há um património com uma só origem, de um agente ou um grupo, que uma vez questionado dê sempre as mesmas respostas. Tudo depende do contexto a partir do qual se lança o olhar, sendo a influência portuguesa o operador comum que, com recurso à História, organiza e disciplina os limites, sem contudo os balizar. Influência nos diversos âmbitos e patamares da interculturalidade: formal e informal, administrativa ou espiritual, comercial ou migracional, colonial e pós-colonial. Eis como, de forma muito sucinta, a problemática contemporânea do património nos apresenta dois desafios basilares: o reconhecimento de alteridades no seio de uma comunidade alargada e o desenvolvimento sustentável. No contexto do projeto que tem como eixo o programa de doutoramento Patrimónios de Influência Portuguesa, e de tudo quanto se tem vindo a constituir em seu redor, isso é material de fundação e inspiração.

During the early modern period, the brotherhoods of Misericórdia were established not only in the overseas territories ruled by the Portuguese, but also beyond their empire, reaching as far as the Philippines and Japan. The twelve chapters of this book examine this expansion by discussing different dimensions of the Misericórdias, such as administration, politics, charitable practices, finances, and forms of discrimination related to social status, gender, and race. Filling a critical gap in anglophone scholarship on the Portuguese Misericórdias, this work's previous absence has been criticized by scholars who believe the Misericórdias are crucial to understanding the past and present of Portuguese communities, both at home and abroad. Contemporary Spain and Portugal share a historical experience as Iberian states which emerged within the context of al-Andalus. These centuries of Muslim presence in the Middle Ages became a contested heritage during the process of modern nation-building with its varied concepts and constructs of national identities. Politicians, historians and intellectuals debated vigorously the question how the Muslim past could be reconciled with the idea of the Catholic nation. The Crescent Remembered investigates the processes of exclusion and integration of the Islamic past within the national narratives. It analyses discourses of historiography, Arabic studies, mythology, popular culture and colonial policies towards Muslim populations from the 19th century to the dictatorships of Franco and Salazar in the 20th century. In particular, it explores why, despite apparent historical similarities, in Spain and Portugal entirely different strategies and discourses concerning the Islamic past emerged. In the process, it seeks to shed light on the role of the Iberian Peninsula as a crucial European historical "contact zone" with Islam.

This book follows the renovation of European economic history towards a more unified interpretation of sources of growth and stagnation. To better understand the diversity of patterns of growth, we need to look beyond the study of the industrialization of the core economies, and explore the centuries before it occurred. Portuguese agriculture was hardly ever at the European productivity and technological forefront and the distance from it varied substantially across the second Millennium. Yet if we look at the periods of the Christian Reconquista, the recovery from the Black Death, the response to the globalization of the Renaissance, to the eighteenth century economic enlightenment, or to nineteenth century industrialization, we may conclude that agriculture in this country of the European periphery was often adaptive and dynamic. The fact that economic backwardness was not overcome by the end of the period is no longer the most relevant aspect of that story.
