Le second chapitre (1896-1929) de l'Histoire sociale des idées au Québec aborde une période de transition et de défis : la tradition se frotte constamment à la modernisation et à la modernité. L'époque s'ouvre sur une question, celle de L'avenir du peuple canadien-français (1896) d'Edmond de Nevers, et culmine avec la crise économique, sociale et spirituelle de la décennie 1930. L'avenir sera du côté de l'émergence, à travers les figures d'Henri Bourassa et de Lionel Groulx, de deux variantes du nationalisme qui traversera le XXe siècle québécois. La vie en ville, la consommation de masse étalée dans les catalogues des magasins à rayons, le sport professionnel et commercialisé, le cinéma, le travail le dimanche drainent une kyrielle de défis pour la langue, la religion et la culture de l'élite ; ces changements provoquent de nouveaux rapports entre employeurs et employés, entre femmes et hommes, entre Canadiens français et immigrants. Pour capter et infléchir cette transition* et faire face au présent, deux mots-clés servent de repères aux contemporains : doctrine et action. Professeur d'histoire et de littérature à l'Université McGill, Yvan Lamonde est connu pour ses travaux sur l'histoire socioculturelle et intellectuelle du Québec.
