Sejak Reformasi 1998 bergulir, historiografi Tionghoa di Indonesia bergeliat. Akan tetapi, berbagai kisah sejarah masyarakat Tionghoa ini hampir tidak pernah disuarakan dalam pembelajaran sejarah di sekolah. Praktik pembelajaran sejarah ditentukan oleh kurikulum, buku teks, dan politik pendidikan yang tidak serta merta berubah seiring Reformasi 1998. Secercah cahaya barulah muncul dalam buku teks Sejarah Indonesia menurut Kurikulum 2013 yang diterbitkan pemerintah tahun 2017-2018. Salah satunya, buku teks ini memuat topik perlawanan Tionghoa terhadap VOC atau Geger Pacinan. Episode ini pernah didapati dalam buku teks sejarah pada era Presiden Sukarno hingga kemudian lenyap akibat perlakuan diskriminasi atas nama asimilasi total pada masa Orde Baru. Direpresentasikannya kembali Tionghoa dalam buku teks pelajaran sejarah bukan semata-mata masalah konten, namun terdapat nilai (value) yang hendak dikonstruksi di dalamnya. Untuk itu, konstruksi kebinekaan dari narasi-narasi tentang Tionghoa dalam buku teks menjadi amat penting. Dengan metode Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), buku ini membongkar representasi Tionghoa dalam buku teks Sejarah Indonesia menurut Kurikulum 2013 yang diterbitkan oleh negara. Pada dimensi teks, Tionghoa direpresentasikan sebagai bagian dari Sejarah Nasional Indonesia yang koheren dan utuh (global coherence), namun masih berpotensi terjebak pada formalitas dan tenggelam pada kedangkalan makna karena terlanjur membekukan ideologi tertentu dalam mempersepsikan Tionghoa. Dimensi kognisi sosial diwarnai pergulatan proses mental yang dibentuk oleh memori kolektif Orde Baru dengan kebaruan yang diusung Reformasi dalam produksi teks tentang Tionghoa. Dimensi konteks sosial memperlihatkan relasi kuasa Orde Baru dan citra negatif terhadap Tionghoa yang belum sepenuhnya hilang telah memberi kerangka bagi kognisi sosial masyarakat. Pada akhirnya, buku ini hendak menggerakkan kesadaran perlunya bentuk ideal dalam mengakomodasi kenyataan kebinekaan melalui pendidikan sejarah yang inklusif. Upaya ini tidak hanya terkait dengan penulisan buku teks, namun membuka rekomendasi bagi guru sejarah bahwa upaya mewujudkan pendidikan sejarah yang inklusif di kelas tidak boleh hanya mengandalkan buku teks belaka. Ketersediaan sumber belajar yang sangat berlimpah, termasuk kearifan lokal setempat bahkan pengalaman hidup siswa, dapat dimanfaatkan sebagai bahan ajar yang memberi ruang pada peran Tionghoa maupun kelompok masyarakat lain dalam mengonstruksi sejarah nasional. Buku teks harus ditempatkan sebagai living document yang senantiasa disesuaikan dengan kebutuhan dan konteks siswa sehingga tercipta pembelajaran yang kontekstual dan bermakna. Dalam pandangan pedagogi kritis, pembelajaran sejarah harus memberdayakan siswa dengan mengeksplorasi beragam sumber belajar untuk mengembangkan daya kritis dan kreatifnya.

Decolonizing the History Curriculum in Malaysia and Singapore is a unique study in the history of education because it examines decolonization in terms of how it changed the subject of history in the school curriculum of two colonized countries – Malaysia and Singapore. Blackburn and Wu’s book analyzes the transition of the subject of history from colonial education to postcolonial education, from the history syllabus upholding the colonial order to the period after independence when the history syllabus became a tool for nation-building. Malaysia and Singapore are excellent case studies of this process because they once shared a common imperial curriculum in the English language schools that was gradually ‘decolonized’ to form the basis of the early history syllabuses of the new nation-states (they were briefly one nation-state in the early to mid-1960s). The colonial English language history syllabus was ‘decolonized’ into a national curriculum that was translated for the Chinese, Malay, and Tamil schools of Malaysia and Singapore. By analyzing the causes and consequences of the dramatic changes made to the teaching of history in the schools of Malaya and Singapore as Britain ended her empire in Southeast Asia, Blackburn and Wu offer fascinating insights into educational reform, the effects of decolonization on curricula, and the history of Malaysian and Singaporean education.

The theme of the conference is "Reconstructing Morals, Education, and Social Sciences for Achieving Sustainable Development Goals". This theme was formulated due to several considerations. First, the symptoms of moral decline that have the potential to destroy the nation. Morals guide humanity towards truth and civilization. The phenomenon of the dehumanization process in the industrial era that pushed people to be part of abstract societies tends to ignore humanity. The education process as a humanitarian system is increasingly marginalized, especially during discussions about the industrial revolution 4.0 and Society 5.0. The conference placed six sub-themes for speakers and participants to share ideas, namely: Social Sciences and Laws, History and Cultural Studies, Interdisciplinary Studies, Morals and Humanities, Policy, Politics, and Communication, Education. The committee has received 195 abstracts from prospective speakers. However, there are only 80 abstracts that are eligible to be presented at this conference.
