Covering a period of more than three hundred years, this volume presents a clear and succinct overview of • the commonwealth’s political history, culture, and geography; • interactions between office holders, civil servants, special interest groups, and the media; • policy development and implementation; • how laws are created, enacted, and enforced; • hierarchy and interaction among state, county, local, and special district government bodies and officials; • tax collection and disbursement; and • the political upheaval in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2020 presidential election. Featuring practical appendixes and interviews with current and past office holders, bureaucrats, party leaders, and political journalists, this astute and informative book is an indispensable tool for understanding politics in the Keystone State.

Pennsylvania Government and Politics gives readers an overview of the government institutions and the politics of the keystone state. It explains how Pennsylvania compares to other states on a wide variety of demographic and economic areas, and examines detailed statistics relating to election results and political trends, with an emphasis on the current party realignment. This comprehensive coverage takes over where historical examinations end by providing specific contemporary data and detailed discussion of the state's political system. The book opens with a profile of Pennsylvania and its rich historical and political heritage. Subsequent chapters are devoted to the history of political parties and elections in the state, the Pennsylvania State Constitution, as well as the three institutions of government: the General Assembly, the executive branch, and the judiciary. The book closes with a chapter on local governments in Pennsylvania. Designed to blend engaging exposition with statistical information that enhances the readers' insights into both institutions and events, Pennsylvania Government and Politics is an ideal text for courses relating to Pennsylvania government and history within the state. It can also be used as a supplemental text for introductory courses in American national government and state and local government. Its tone and style make the book appealing to any lay reader with an interest in the topic.

Capitol Journey written by Vincent P. Carocci and has been published by Penn State Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-11-01 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

Vincent Carocci's story is the story of a professional lifetime in and around Pennsylvania state government. He describes the characters who covered the news in the State Capitol, their work habits, their character, their strengths, and their foibles. Carocci's story is also the story of the legislative process and those who gave it life and breath. He describes an unpredictable, sometimes unsightly process of politics, personal machinations, and legislative reorganizations. Finally, Carocci's story is the story of Pennsylvania governors, six in all, who assumed the pinnacle of political power in the state - their successes, their shortcomings, and, above all, their legacies. Having worked most closely with Robert Casey, Carocci recounts the many trials and tribulations of his two terms in office, including the 1992 Democratic convention when Casey's steadfast opposition to abortion made him a virtual outcast within his own party, and the recurring medical problems that challenged him throughout his tenure.

Excerpt: ... chapter iii Whig Coalition And Democratic Schism v Jackson's relentless course in destroying the Bank served to Bffeot of til Bank war alienate many otherwise "reliant Jacksonites." Many a Democrat, while still adhering to the party, repudiated the strenuous policy of the Dictator. Such a group of disaffected Democrats were by no means insignificant. They seem to have been especially numerous in Philadelphia, where they met frequently to follow the paradoxical course of supporting the Democratic party while denouncing Jackson and upholding the Bank. We have Democrats seen that under the proud name of Independent-Democrats, they ecede from their party served to weaken the power of the Democratic machine in the state. By their negative action, they constituted an element of strength on which the National Republicans counted in subsequent elections. Agreement in sentiment led to agreement in action, and in the autumn of 1833 both party groups were meeting together in the wards of Philadelphia to protest against "the state of things at Washington." Later, they went so far as to unite in forming their city and county tickets. In Southwark, a large joint assemblage instructed their delegates to nominate for Congress none but a decided Anti-Jackson man. Thus, certain Democrats were strengthening the opposition at the expense of their own party. oppotionf Another and smaller group which indirectly aided the Nato jackeoa tional-Republican cause were the "Sons of Hibernia." The "Nationals" made bids for the Irish vote, insisting that "VanBuren, being a Dutchman, scorned an Irishman." "The United States Gazette" spoke of the union of the Democratic-AntiJackson and Irishmen's Ticket, and declared that in the elections of 1832, "the Naturalized...
