Barbarian Sentiments written by William Pfaff and has been published by Hill & Wang this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000 with Political Science categories.

When Barbarian Sentiments first appeared in early 1989 the Berlin Wall had not been breached, the Soviet Union was still an "evil empire", and the United States called itself the "leader of the free world". William Pfaff offered an iconoclastic, coruscating examination of America's predicament in a world that had escaped the conventions of American public debate and the old categories (and pieties) of American foreign policy. In this wholly revised and enlarged edition, Pfaff reconsiders American policy in the post-Cold War world. As he observed originally, it has been hard for us to accept that there are problems at the heart of American national security that may have no solution. We recoil from acknowledging the complexities and perversities of history, and there are exhausted ideas, Pfaff suggests, like dead stars, that continue to shape our political culture. The problem is how to free ourselves from them. At the beginning of a new century, this is ever more true, and Pfaff's troubled reflections on the moral significance of the American experience in the modern world is even more pertinent today than a decade ago.

Riches And Poverty written by Donald Winch and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1996-01-26 with Business & Economics categories.

In Riches and Poverty, Donald Winch explores the implications of a fundamental and influential idea in political economy. Adam Smith's science of the legislator provided a key to studying the rich and poor in commercial societies, transformed an ancient debate on luxury and inequality, and furnished a basis for assessing the American and French revolutions. Against this background, Britain embarked on its career as the first manufacturing nation, and Malthus made his first contributions to a debate which concluded with the Poor Law Amendment Act of 1834. Malthus provoked fierce opposition from the Lake poets, opening an intellectual rift that persisted throughout the nineteenth century and continues to influence our perceptions of cultural history. Donald Winch has written a compelling and consistently-argued narrative of these developments, which emphasises throughout the moral and political bearings of economic ideas.

Our conventional view of history and human progress is wrong. It is founded on a pernicious myth of an acheivable utopia that in the last century alone caused the murder of tens of millions. In Black Mass John Gray tears down the religious, political and secular beliefs that we insist are fundamental to the human project and shows us how a misplaced faith in our ability to improve the world has actually made it far worse.

The Craftsman written by Richard Sennett and has been published by Penguin UK this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-02-05 with Social Science categories.

Why do people work hard, and take pride in what they do? This book, a philosophically-minded enquiry into practical activity of many different kinds past and present, is about what happens when people try to do a good job. It asks us to think about the true meaning of skill in the 'skills society' and argues that pure competition is a poor way to achieve quality work. Sennett suggests, instead, that there is a craftsman in every human being, which can sometimes be enormously motivating and inspiring - and can also in other circumstances make individuals obsessive and frustrated. The Craftsman shows how history has drawn fault-lines between craftsman and artist, maker and user, technique and expression, practice and theory, and that individuals' pride in their work, as well as modern society in general, suffers from these historical divisions. But the past lives of crafts and craftsmen show us ways of working (using tools, acquiring skills, thinking about materials) which provide rewarding alternative ways for people to utilise their talents. We need to recognise this if motivations are to be understood and lives made as fulfilling as possible.

The Early Colombian Labor Movement written by David Sowell and has been published by Temple University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1992 with Art categories.

David Sowell traces the history of artisan labor organizations in Bogotá and examines long-term political activity of Colombian artisans in the century after independence. Relying on contemporary newspapers, political handouts, broadsides, and public petitions, Sowell analyzes the economic, social, and political history of the capital's artisan class, a middling social sector with very significant social and political strengths. This is the first study in English of nineteenth-century Latin American artisans and one of the few treatments that spans the whole of nineteenth-century Colombian history. The rise and late decline of artisan class political activity coincided the Colombia's integration into the world market. Initially petitioning for tariff protection, Bogotá's craftsmen in time mobilized to address numerous issues, including industrial education, internal trade order, credit, and better health and educational facilities. Sowell traces the transformation of Colombia's economy and the (mainly negative) effects its evolution had on bogotano artisans. By the end of the nineteenth century, the artisans class was fragmented, their labor leadership replaced by workers associated with industrial production, transportation systems, and the production of coffee. Author note: David Sowell is Assistant Professor of History at Juniata College.
