Pensar el Otro, dejar de pensar el Uno, parece que se ha convertido en la tarea de la filosofía para muchos filósofos franceses protagonistas de la estación que ha seguido a la crisis del estructuralismo. Levinas y Derrida han planteado del modo más radical el tema de la alteridad en el centro de la investigación filosófica. Y lo han hecho no tanto optando por una perspectiva meramente antagonista respecto a la tradición filosófica de Occidente, sino indagando en esta misma tradición los puntos de apoyo para efectuar una transformación radical del sentido de sus tesis, y propiciando una discusión radical de su lógica. El presente libro sigue el camino trazado por Derrida, que lleva de la reconstrucción del primado de la presencia, de la identidad y del ligamen estructural en el pensamiento filosófico, al interés progresivo por la inscripción del Otro en el discurso. Un camino en el que Derrida recoge la herencia de Levinas y la contamina con los caracteres dialécticos del logos griego. En este punto se examina el pensamiento de Levinas, que a la tendencia totalizante e interiorizante de la ontología opone el absolutamente Otro como referencia irreducible en el proceso de constitución de la identidad y del sujeto.

The Colombian activist Juan Gregorio Palechor (1923–1992) dedicated his life to championing indigenous rights in Cauca, a department in the southwest of Colombia, where he helped found the Regional Indigenous Council of Cauca. Recounting his life story in collaboration with the Colombian anthropologist Myriam Jimeno, Palechor traces his political awakening, his experiences in national politics, the disillusionment that resulted, and his turn to a more radical activism aimed at confronting ethnic discrimination and fighting for indigenous territorial and political sovereignty. For Native peoples of California, the abalone found along the state’s coast have remarkably complex significance as food, spirit, narrative symbol, tradable commodity, and material with which to make adornment and sacred regalia. The large mollusks also represent contemporary struggles surrounding cultural identity and political sovereignty. Abalone Tales, a collaborative ethnography, presents different perspectives on the multifaceted material and symbolic relationships between abalone and the Ohlone, Pomo, Karuk, Hupa, and Wiyot peoples of California. The research agenda, analyses, and writing strategies were determined through collaborative relationships between the anthropologist Les W. Field and Native individuals and communities. Several of these individuals contributed written texts or oral stories for inclusion in the book. Tales about abalone and their historical and contemporary meanings are related by Field and his coauthors, who include the chair and other members of the Muwekma Ohlone Tribe; a Point Arena Pomo elder; the chair of the Wiyot tribe and her sister; several Hupa Indians; and a Karuk scholar, artist, and performer. Reflecting the divergent perspectives of various Native groups and people, the stories and analyses belie any presumption of a single, unified indigenous understanding of abalone. At the same time, they shed light on abalone’s role in cultural revitalization, struggles over territory, tribal appeals for federal recognition, and connections among California’s Native groups. While California’s abalone are in danger of extinction, their symbolic power appears to surpass even the environmental crises affecting the state’s vulnerable coastline.

In the midst of native people's discontent following Spanish conquest, a native Andean born after the fall of the Incas took up the pen to protest Spanish rule. Felipe Guaman Poma de Ayala wrote his Nueva corónica y buen gobierno to inform Philip III of Spain about the evils of colonialism and the need for governmental and societal reform. By examining Guaman Poma's verbal and visual engagement with the institutions of Western art and culture, Rolena Adorno shows how he performed a comprehensive critique of the colonialist discourse of religion, political theory, and history. She argues that Guaman Poma's work chronicles the emergence of a uniquely Latin American voice, characterized by the articulation of literary art and politics. Following the initial appearance of Guaman Poma: Writing and Resistance in Colonial Peru, the 1990s witnessed the creation of a range of new studies that underscore the key role of the Nueva corónica y buen gobierno in facilitating our understanding of the Andean and Spanish colonial pasts. Con enorme gusto presentamos este número del Boletín del CEAS correspondiente al año 2016 que coincide con su cuarenta aniversario. Como parte de las celebraciones, este número está dedicado a dos temáticas, la primera referida a la trayectoria del Colegio en la cual su primer presidente, Andrés Fábregas, y la última presidenta, Cristina Oehmichen, reflexionan sobre el papel del CEAS para la antropología mexicana así como sobre sus retos a futuro y para nuestro país en su conjunto. La segunda temática de este número está dedicada a la Asociación Latinoamericana de Antropología (ALA) en la cual diversos miembros de nuestro colegio han tenido un papel importante, desde su fundación hasta el momento actual. Como una expresión de la relación CEAS-ALA, el último Consejo Directivo 2013-2015 asumió la responsabilidad de organizar su IV Congreso, que se llevó a cabo de 7 al 10 de octubre de 2015, en la Ciudad de México. El congreso fue co-organizado con otras instituciones académicas nacionales como la Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM), la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) el Centro de Investigaciones y Estudios Superiores en Antropología Social (CIESAS), el Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia (INAH), la Escuela Nacional de Antropología e Historia (ENAH), el Colegio de Michoacán (COLMICH), la Universidad Iberoamericana (UIA), la Universidad Autónoma de la Ciudad de México (UACM), el Colegio de San Luis (COLSAN) y el Fideicomiso de la Ciudad de México. El congreso fue un éxito por la gran asistencia de colegas de 42 países diferentes, por los aproximadamente 1,300 ponentes y por la diversidad de debates que allí tuvieron lugar. Por ello consideramos pertinente que la sección central del boletín estuviera dedicada a difundir los trabajos de cinco ponentes que participaron en la mesa magistral sobre epistemologías en la antropología latinoamericana, que se realizó en este marco. En sus cuarenta años la vida, el CEAS ha pasado por diversas etapas, que tienen que ver con sus objetivos fundacionales, su papel dentro del gremio antropológico y el interés por responder a los grandes problemas nacionales de manera que, en buena medida, gran parte de las actividades que ha encabezado han sido una respuesta a los contextos específicos por lo que ha transitado el gremio y la vida del país. Esto no es de extrañar dado que toda actividad científica y profesional está situada y contextualizada en un momento histórico, al que el colegio ha respondido y que se ha traducido en énfasis específicos hacia ciertos temas y problemas que han sido debatidos por cada Consejo Directivo.
