With the revived use of film noir by such contemporary directors as Scorsese, Altman, and the Coen brothers, there has been heightened public and academic interest in the film noir as a genre movement and style. In this Perspectives volume, French theories of film noir are discussed with translations of key book reviews, essays and articles. Anglo-American theory and criticism - especially scholarship from the 1980s - illuminates social, literary and philosophical contexts of film noir in the 1940s, and the revival of its themes, style and subject matters in the 1970s and 1980s.

Light Motives written by Randall Halle and has been published by Wayne State University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003 with Literary Criticism categories.

Critics rarely associate popular film with German cinema, despite the international success of such films as Das Boot (1981), The Never-Ending Story (1984), Run, Lola, Run (1998), and recent German comedies, all representing a rich body of work outside the parameters of high culture. This very success compels the authors of Light Motives to take an unprecedented look at German popular film across the historical spectrum and to challenge the tendency among critics to divvy up German film, like Germans themselves, into the Good and the Bad. Together the essays reexamine popular film production along with larger cultural, historical, and political meanings suggested by the term "popular." Most critical accounts have focused on the golden era of Weimar film and the New German Cinema of the 1960s and 70s leaving much of popular film by the wayside. This volume attributes the division to such sources as Frankfurt School dictates, Goethe Haus film offerings, and state-funded film production during the 1970s, which promoted high-culture art films to broadcast the success of West German democratization. The essays challenge the traditional shape of German film history, while offering in-depth analyses of films that have until now been beyond the pale of critical attention. What emerges is a "Never-Ending Story" of oft-repeated obsessions, overlapping generic forms, omnipresent or subtle nods to Hollywood, and myriad political concerns irreducible to a unified message or aesthetic form-all bearing witness to the vibrancy of German culture.

SCMS Award Winner "Best Edited Collection" The standard analytical category of "national cinema" has increasingly been called into question by the category of the "transnational." This anthology examines the premises and consequences of the coexistence of these two categories and the parameters of historiographical approaches that cross the borders of nation-states. The three sections of World Cinemas, Transnational Perspectives cover the geopolitical imaginary, transnational cinematic institutions, and the uneven flow of words and images.

The Guide, the book written by RK Narayan, fired the imagination of Dev Anand to bring that story to celluloid. The film Guide brought maximum success and fame to Navketan. It justifiably bagged several Filmfare awards for that year; after all, it was an epic film, which was at once radical and traditional. Genius always provokes admiration and curiosity. Why did Guide succeed when others failed? Was there a workable formula that others could use for subsequent films? What made Guide a classic? Guide lovers have asked themselves and each other these questions from time to time. Finally, when a few of them saw the terribly tedious English version of Guide, they realised that the Hindi film needed study, because both had the same plot, almost the same cast and crew, and yet the difference was stunning. They then decided to do a study of this classic and bring it in the form of a book to be read by lovers of great cinema. This urge to redefine and analyse the extraordinariness of the cult film led to this collection of essays. The fourteen writers attempt to focus on different aspects of the film, even if there are overlaps, which are inevitable in a project such as this. The book also intends to be a tribute to the masters, Vijay Anand, Dev Anand, Waheeda Rehman, Fali Mistry, SD Burman, Shailendra, Lata Mangeshkar, Mohammed Rafi, Kishore Kumar and Manna Dey. Not to forget the other members of the cast and crew who reached for the apex of their talents and produced a chef d'oeuvre. This book is a unique collaborative study, fuelled by lovers of cinema and its music. The fourteen writers are Lata Jagtiani, Manek Premchand, Ajay Kanagat, Antara Nanda Mondal, Bobby Sing, Deepa Buty, Dharmakirthi, Gaurav Sahay, Kalpana Swamy, Monica Kar, MV Devraj, Pisharoty Chandran, Sundeep Pahwa and Vijay Kumar. It's a book that all Guide lovers must possess.

The national cinemas of Czechoslovakia and East Germany were two of the most vital sites of filmmaking in the Eastern Bloc, and over the course of two decades, they contributed to and were shaped by such significant developments as Sovietization, de-Stalinization, and the conservative retrenchment of the late 1950s. This volume comprehensively explores the postwar film cultures of both nations, using a “stereoscopic” approach that traces their similarities and divergences to form a richly contextualized portrait. Ranging from features to children’s cinema to film festivals, the studies gathered here provide new insights into the ideological, political, and economic dimensions of Cold War cultural production.

New Perspectives On Early Cinema History written by Mario Slugan and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-06-02 with Performing Arts categories.

In this book, editors Mario Slugan and Daniël Biltereyst present a theoretical reconceptualization of early cinema. To do so, they highlight the latest methods and tools for analysis, and cast new light on the experience of early cinema through the application of these concepts and methods. The international host of contributors evaluate examples of early cinema across the globe, including The May Irwin Kiss (1896), Un homme de têtes (1900), The Terrible Turkish Executioner (1904) and Tom Tom the Piper's Son (1905). In doing so, they address the periodization of the era, emphasizing the recent boon in the availability of primary materials, the rise of digital technologies, the developments in new cinema history, and the persistence of some conceptualizations as key incentives for rethinking early cinema in theoretical and methodological terms. They go on to highlight cutting-edge approaches to the study of early cinema, including the use of the Mediathread Platform, the formation of new datasets with the help of digital technologies, and exploring the early era in non-western cultures. Finally, the contributors revisit early cinema audiences and exhibition contexts by investigating some of the earliest screenings in Denmark and the US, exploring the details of black cinema going in Harlem, and examining exhibition practices in Germany.
