Los años de la segunda República representaron uno de los más ambiciosos proyectos de renovación política para España. Durante un tiempo se creyó realmente en la posibilidad de transformar las estructuras de un país anquilosado y encauzarlo de un modo definitivo en las sendas de la modernidad, el liberalismo y la revolución social. Naturalmente, también los arquitectos quisieron participar en esa aspiración colectiva que soñaba con el advenimiento de una nueva sociedad. Así, el trabajo de la generación de arquitectos de finales de los años veinte y treinta se caracterizó por una actitud progresista que imitaba los símbolos del avance tecnológico, por la eliminación de ornamentos superfluos y por la búsqueda de un funcionalismo racionalista.
