Traditional studies of theater have long neglected an overall study of female roles as written by male playwrights. Are the roles blatantly sexist or do they adhere to the cultural norms that even progressive male playwrights cannot ignore? From Georg Buchner's Woyzeck to David Hare's Plenty, the ten plays studied here have traditionally been seen as extraordinarily innovative and progressive. Despite their seeming openness, each of the plays is affected by the playwright's sexual politics. Laid out is a framework for studying the plays in a feminist context that permits a new reading of the female roles, while still allowing the critic enjoyment of the performance as a whole.

Excerpt from Arthur Wing Pinero, Playwright: A Study If any apology is required in behalf of this little book, it must be an apology not so much to its readers as to him who is the subject of it. Criticism is seldom apologetic, and yet, as it seems to me, it always ought to include at least a veiled petition that the critic may be absolved from the faults of hasty judgment and distorted vision. To make anything is hard, and, in proportion, meritorious. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. August Wilson penned his first play after seeing a man shot to death. Horton Foote began writing plays to create parts for himself as an actor. Edward Albee faced commercial pressures to modify his scripts-and resisted. After Wit, Margaret Edson swore off playwriting altogether and decided to keep her day job as a kindergarten teacher, instead. The Playwright's Muse presents never-before-published interviews with some of the greatest names of American drama-all recent winners of the Pulitzer Prize. In these scintillating exchanges with eleven leading dramatists, we learn about their inspirations and begin to grasp how the creative process works in the mind of a writer. We learn how their first plays took shape, how it felt to read their first reviews, and what keeps them writing for theater today. Introductory essays on each playwright's life and work, written by theater artists and scholars with strong professional relationships to their subjects, provide additional insight into the writers' contributions to contemporary theater.

Furthermore, the book looks at situations that the emerging playwright is likely to encounter, including: handling rehearsals, workshops, castings, re-writing, venues, reviews, successes and failure. The book concludes with seventeen interviews with other USA-based playwrights, representing a wide range of experience, from writers just starting to make a name for themselves to seasoned, award-winning veterans such as Sheila Callaghan, Steven Dietz, Keith Glover, Lauren Gunderson, John Pielmeier and Jen Silverman. Author Jon Klein has a wealth of experience with over 30 of his plays produced in the USA and over 100 productions, including include T Bone N Weasel, Dimly Perceived Threats to the System, Betty the Yeti, and his most recent play, Resolving Hedda. Klein draws upon the lessons he has learned from his associations with numerous established theatre folk, many from the start of their careers. These include figures such as Bob Falls, Gregory Hines, Jon Jory, Kenny Leon, Dan Sullivan, and August Wilson.clude figures such as Bob Falls, Gregory Hines, Jon Jory, Kenny Leon, Dan Sullivan, and August Wilson.

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1890 edition. Excerpt: ... (2.) Histrionic traditions developed at various times during the history of the stage. The construction of the theatre has already been explained in a preceding chapter,1 an acquaintance with which, on the part of the student, will be assumed in what follows. 3. Point of View of the Audience. -- The stage has but three sides. This is a point so often neglected, that it is worth while emphasizing it by means of italics. The stage has a back, and a right and a left side; but the front is removed in order that the audience may see what is going on. While in a novel or description, therefore, persons may be represented as acting in a four-sided room, and as seen from any and every point of view, in the drama they must be shown as acting in a room with one side removed, and as seen from any one of a limited number of viewpoints. From this fact the following rules may be deduced: -- (1.) Every important action must take place in the centre of the stage, well forward. For this reason, strong situations must be made independent of scenery, unless the latter can be brought well down to the front. For example, a conversation between two characters before the door of a house, when the house is painted on a flat or drop at the back of the stage, will, for the bulk of the audience, be almost wholly lost. The case 1 See Chapter ii. will be still worse if the house is at the side and well back. In such cases, the best plan is to provide a front scene; that is, one in which a scene is pushed out on each side, in the grooves at 1 E. R. and L. (2.) Care must be taken that, when two actions are represented as taking place at the same time, one does not hide the other from some one of the spectators. (3.) The actors should not be compelled by any action of...
