Comori neprețuite de simțiri duioase de idei înalte de notițe istorice de crezări superstițioase de datini strămoșești și mai cu seamă de frumuseți poetice pline de originalitate și fără seamăn în literaturile străine poeziile noastre poporale compun o avere națională demnă de a fi scoasă la lumină ca un titlu de glorie pentru nația română. Cu această sintagmă poporul român și-a numit în Evul mediu o parte mare a creației sale folclorice însoțită de melodie dar nefiind de ritual și anume – subiectele epice epico-lirice și lirico-epice ori și lirice dar cu elemente narative caracter explicit sau implicit povestitor și fiind diferențiate după criteriul temporal (aparțin trecutului îndepărtat și mai rar celui apropiat). Termenul cântece bătrânești rămâne totuși în temei plauzibil și în uz teoretico-practic pentru a denumi (desemna) un domeniu larg de poezie cântată populară pe care am moștenit-o de la străbuni și care reflectă trecutul glorios de luptă faptele mărețe evenimentele istorice reale și cazurile de viață cotidiană ieșite din comun purtând o coloratură legendară istorică nuvelistică (în sens de noutate) etc. și un suflu inegal al patosului epicnarativ dar nefiind dominate decât mai rar de suflul liricului expus de la persoana întâi la timpul prezent.
