Political Correctness “Geoffrey Hughes has brought together with great panache the very many manifestations of political correctness, both absurd and vicious, and shown how they express a single collective mind-set. His book establishes beyond doubt that there is such a phenomenon, that it has become dominant in our culture, and that it represents a growing tendency to censor public debate and to prevent people from questioning orthodoxies which we all know to be false.” Roger Scruton, American Enterprise Institute “What a joy this book is! Hughes’ study traces, with unflagging zest, the modern history of PC. Sumptuous in data, in judgment precise, this is the latest and fullest of Hughes’ series on the social history of language.” Walter Nash, Professor Emeritus, University of Nottingham Political Correctness is now an everyday phrase and part of the modern mindset. Everyone thinks they know what it means, but its own meaning constantly shifts. Its surprising origins have led to it becoming integrated into contemporary culture in ways that are both idealistic and ridiculous. Originally grounded in respect for difference and sensitivity to suffering, it has often become a distraction and even a silencer of genuine issues, provoking satire and parody. In this carefully researched, thought-provoking book, Geoffrey Hughes examines the trajectory of political correctness and its impact on public life. Exploring the origins, progress, content, and style of PC, Hughes’ journey leads us through authors as diverse as Chaucer, Shakespeare and Swift; Philip Larkin, David Mamet, and J.M. Coetzee; from nursery rhymes to Spike Lee films. Focusing on the historical, semantic, and cultural aspects of political correctness, this outstanding and unique work will intrigue anyone interested in this ongoing debate.

Political correctness is the antithesis of education. Education is about opening the mind and encouraging thought and that will sometimes include ideas which might be characterised as dangerous. Notions of political correctness are about corralling thought and banishing ideas which don't fit prevailing prejudices and ideologies. Political correctness has no place in beneficial education. -- Alan Jones - Radio and TV commentator and journalist.

Seminar paper from the year 2007 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,3, University of Duisburg-Essen, course: Language and Gender, 10 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: In London during the 1980ies there were reports in the right-wing press, that socialist local councils like Hackney Council had to banish the word manhole by order of its Women's Committee since the term was meant to be sexist. This is just one out of many incidences that came up during the political correctness debate. Since the eighties this phenomenon has occurred on the American campuses and developed rapidly to a publicly debated subject. This essay will deal with the phenomenon of the political correctness in the English language with the main focus on gender questions and feminist linguistics. The central question is if expressions like policemen or phrases like to be the master of the situation are really conceived as sexist by the majority of people and if replacing those by terms like "police officers" can solve the problem of sexist language use. Have the efforts to regulate or reform language been successful and can language be at all non-sexist or even neutral? First of all, the term political correctness and politically correct are placed into a historical context explaining its roots and development before trying to define the concept. Furthermore, the importance of the political correctness debate for the Women's Liberation Movement and the development of feminist linguistics will be explained. The third chapter explains on which assumptions and theories the claimed language change is based on. The relation between language use and perception of the individual or of a group plays a central part. In the context of the political correctness debate the central question is in how far sexist language use, representation, the naming or not naming of women effects the perception and thinking of people. The fourth chapter give

Policies governing what is taught in America's colleges and universities, who is admitted, and how faculty are hired (for years viewed as standards of excellence) are now being replaced by standards aimed at "multicultural diversity." Traditional standards are criticized as inherently racist, sexist, and oppressive, while the new perspective is said to be "politically correct." Today, important questions are being raised: - Should the study of Western culture be replaced by "multiculturalism"? - Is affirmative action inherently racist? - Should accrediting bodies require a commitment to diversity? - What is political correctness? - Should the traditional canon of the great works of Western literature be replaced, amended, or remain the same? - Do minority study programs really benefit the people they are supposed to help? - Are "speech codes" on college campuses inconsistent with the First Amendment? Are You Politically Correct? brings together selections that span the political gamut from the far left to the far right, demonstrating the clash of views on the many issues surrounding the political correctness debate.

'The contempt for ordinary people and for patriotism that the politically correct have is unconcealed. They have successfully infiltrated ... public institutions from where they can enforce their creed on everyone else. Importantly, they further get access to public monies ... the consequences are far reaching.'In the West, political correctness is the ascendant ideology since the rise of the so-called New Left in the 1960s. It has infiltrated the public sector and its devotees have gained access to legislative powers of enforcement and, importantly, public monies.Dissent is not tolerated. Dissenters, even children, are persecuted. Minorities are deemed victims and as being oppressed, while the majority are deemed the oppressors. A hatred of the West is aggressively promoted. Terrorism is excused.Free Speech is not allowed. Only politically correct views are tolerated. The media present propaganda instead of the truth.Human Rights are corrupted into being a vehicle for political correctness with lots of fees for its advocates.Sex attacks on women and even children by immigrants are covered up, if not tolerated.Democracy is undermined as bureaucrats and international organizations highjack the powers of the nation state. The interests and opinions of ordinary people are ignored.Economies are plundered. High taxes are imposed. In Europe, the interests of the EU take priority over national prosperity. The 'chauvinism of prosperity' is condemned.Race War Politics is aggressively promoted. White people are deemed racist, unless they advocate political correctness, and a repopulation policy of mass immigration is enforced against the express wishes and interests of the host nation. The zealotry and conflict political correctness brings is the product of its communist heritage, going as far back as the Communist Manifesto of 1848. It has been rightly described as 'cultural Marxism'.'Like vampires, communists lurk in dark places away from the sunlight of public awareness. For them to succeed, it is important that their activities are not recognised until it is too late. So they crawl about various government, charity, and other public organizations, feeding off ordinary peoples' monies.'

Seminar paper from the year 2016 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,3, University of Cologne, course: How Language Change(s), language: English, abstract: The thesis of my paper is that prescriptions of politically correct language cause language change and may lead to an increasing equivocalness of language by incorporating euphemisms. To back up this argument, I will introduce the model of the so called euphemism treadmill created by linguist Steven Pinker. At first, a definition of the term political correctness will be given in the introduction. Furthermore, I will examine how language is changed through PC and through which mechanisms prescriptive speech codes emerge and can spread nationwide. Additionally, due to the fact that the very first speech restrictions were set up on US high school campuses, I will also provide a survey in which I analyze the Self-attitude of students of the Philosophical Faculty (University of Cologne) towards politically correct language, with a special focus on nonsexist/genderneutral language. The results will be then compared to the current situation in the U.S.

The Politically Correct Netherlands written by Herman Vuijsje and has been published by Praeger this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000-08-30 with History categories.

In the 1960s, the Netherlands became known as an anarchists social laboratory, producing one of the earliest examples of political correctness. Strong taboos in areas such as governmental control, privacy, and racial relations were the rule. While the Netherlands has become a country with a large degree of personal freedom, the ideas that originated in the openness of the 1960s have since spilled over from the private into the public sphere, resulting in an era of anxious conformity. Vuijsje, a Dutch journalist, examines why notions of political correctness became so strongly ingrained in the Netherlands and how the results have not always been positive. The ideology of political correctness created totems and taboos that made it difficult to deal with, or even signal the presence of, the real problems in Dutch society. This has often led to a worsening of the situation for precisely the social groups that society wanted to protect, such as racial minorities. Vuijsje traces this issue back to historical conditions that include: the public feeling of guilt about the large number of Dutch Jews killed in the war; the scope and duration of the baby boom; and the continuing Dutch prosperity. This study is an essay on the way that the Dutch government and its officials have functioned over the last thirty years and on the changing relationship between the authority of the state and its citizens. Fully annotated to make it accessible to those less familiar with Dutch society. Vujisje's book offers a perspective of the issue of political correctness that has been muted in the American discussions of the issue and that is especially refreshing. His book is of interest not only to student of the Netherlands but also to students of Western society as a whole.
