The Politics of Heaven and Hell makes an invaluable contribution to the understanding of classical, medieval, and modern political philosophy, while explaining the profound problem with modernity. Christianity "freed men from the overwhelming burden of ever thinking that their salvation will ultimately come from the political order", writes Fr. James Schall, S.J. Modernity, on the other hand, is a perversion of Christianity, which tries to achieve man's salvation in this world. It does this by politicizing everything, which results in the absolute state: "The distance from the City of God to the Leviathan is not at all far once the City of God is relocated on earth." The best defense against this tyranny is "the adequate description of the highest things, of what is beyond politics". Both reason and revelation are needed for this work, and they are eloquently and ably set forth in this book.

"For centuries, scholars have mined the pages of Augustine of Hippo's magnum opus, the City of God, for all manner of theoretical concepts and doctrines ranging from political and just war theories to salvation history and sin. To date, this well-excavated text has not been quarried with a feminist eschatological lens. Despite the sexist legacy attributed to Augustine, this study asks: Do women have a stake in the City of God? If so, to what extent? The recurring theme that runs through Augustine's text speaks to two orders of human society: civitas dei and civitas terrena, the city of God and the earthly city. These orders, identified by their God-directed or self-directed loves, create a powerful tension between the iniquities of life and human potential. Eschatological love and the politics of heaven take shape within this tension. The aim of this investigation has been to break ground in a new direction by examining the ways in which feminist eschatology can utilize or benefit from Augustine's eschatological enterprise." --

Written as the First World War was finally drawing to a close, A. Clutton-Brock’s reflections on the Kingdom of Heaven examine this challenging theological concept in light of the great religious, political and moral uncertainties thrown up by the conflict. In particular, Clutton-Brock contends that historically Christian orthodoxy has not sufficiently emphasised the role of the Kingdom in salvation, given its importance in the ministry and teaching of Christ. To preserve a religious vision capable of interacting with the modern, industrial world, Christian orthodoxy must carefully consider the scope and importance of political practice, the role of the individual in the realisation of the Kingdom, and the profound implications of reconciling the facts of the universe with the most sincerely held beliefs.

This study outlines the broad features of a Christian politics as it is found in the Sermon on the Mount. I interpret this text in conversation with the theologies of Gustavo Gutierrez and John Howard Yoder. I argue that two models of political community can be discerned in Matthew 5: first, the kingdom of God, which is anticipated in the worship and social organization of the church, and secondly, the kingdoms of the world, which are distinguished by the contest for power and the oppression of those who do not prevail in that struggle. The theology of Gutierrez, written in the context of political and social oppression in Latin America, is especially effective in exposing and prophetically denouncing the acute injustice of the latter political order. Because Gutierrez thinks of politics only in terms of statecraft, however, he is unable to articulate the creative alternative politics of the church. By contrast, Yoder's vision of the church as a diaspora community is a faithful reflection of the alternative politics found in the Sermon on the Mount. Christian social practices, such as nonviolence, enemy-love, and unlimited generosity, give form to this politics. My interpretation of Matthew 6 and 7 focuses on the centrality of prayer and grace to the alternative politics of the Sermon on the Mount. I conclude the dissertation with a discussion of Gutierrez's theology of grace. I argue that Gutierrez's understanding of grace, when viewed apart from his limited conception of politics as statecraft, can be shown to support the political form of the diaspora church, particularly its rejection of the power politics of the world. Gutierrez's understanding of grace also provides his theology with a mystical core that preserves his writings against ethico-political reductionism. Furthermore, it is shown how questions of ethics and politics fuel divine contemplation in the work of Gutierrez. It is suggested that a similar appreciation of the relation between ethics and contemplation might allow us to rein in the reductionistic tendencies in the work of Yoder.
