Einen feierlichen Ton wählt Siegfried Unseld im Eingangssatz seines ersten Briefs an Peter Handke: „ich freue mich, Ihnen mitteilen zu können, daß wir nach genauer Lektüre Ihres Manuskriptes uns entschieden haben, Ihre Arbeit in den Suhrkamp Verlag zu übernehmen.“ Mit diesem Schreiben vom August 1965 setzt eine Korrespondenz ein, in der nach annähernd 600 Briefen Peter Handke dem Verleger zum 75. Geburtstag gratuliert: „Du bist und warst wie selten einer zum stillen, wohltätigen Dasein und Mitgehen (und Vorausschwimmen) fähig.“ Über einen Zeitraum von mehr als 35 Jahren besprachen Peter Handke und Siegfried Unseld das ihnen Wichtigste schriftlich: die Literatur, die Bücher, unterrichtete der Autor den Verleger von seinen Vorhaben, hielt Unseld schriftlich seine Eindrücke über die neuen Manuskripte fest, diskutierten beide Erscheinungstermin und Ausstattung von Büchern, Publikationsstrategien und Kritikerrezensionen. Am Leitfaden der intensiven Arbeit an und für Literatur eröffnet dieser Briefwechsel völlig neue Einsichten in die Bedingungen des Schreibens und der Verbreitung von Büchern, zeichnet die intellektuelle Biographie beider Korrespondenten, ihr unablässiges Arbeiten an neuen Ausdrucksformen sowie deren materiellen, geographischen, politischen und persönlichen Begleitumstände. This is the first book to apply the concept of ‘contents tourism’ in a global context and to establish an international and interdisciplinary framework for contents tourism research.
