A serious and independent contribution to the literature of autobiography. -- John SturrockFrench StudiesClearly a landmark study. It seems certain to provoke a great deal of productive debate among those concerned with any of the many issues it raises. -- Comparative Literature The literary self-portrait, often considered to be an ill- formed autobiography, is receiving more attention as a result of the current obsession with personal narrative, but little progress has been made toward an understanding of its specific features. With Poetics of the Literary Self-Portrait, Michel Beaujour reveals the hidden ambitions of this genre. From St. Augustine to Montaigne, from Nietzsche to Malraux, Leiris and Barthes, individual self-portraits are analyzed jointly with the enduring cultural matrix from which self-portrayal derives its disconcerting non-narrative structure, and many of its recurrent topics.

This collection of literary portraits forms a gallery of life-like representations of some remarkable Russian authors. Here we have Tolstoi -- "superhumanly wise," Chekhov -- "sagely modest," Korolenko -- "calm and of an extraordinary simplicity," Kotsubinsky -- "at home in the ideal world of beauty and good," Garin-Mikhailovsky -- "gifted, inexhaustibly cheerful," Prishvin, who wrote about "The Earth, our Great Mother."

Throughout the long course of literature, islands have accumulated uncanny connotations of death, together with peculiarities of linguistic definition and expression. Since the age of discovery, after the Caribbean Islands, America itself, and later the archipelagos and atolls in the Pacific became known to travellers and conquistadores, islands have been sought, searched, explored and physically possessed as women; cultural recognition takes the form of sexual and physical possession (Venus was born from the sea, and is identified with an island). These are the themes of the first two variations discussed in this book.

Excerpt from Literary Portraits Fontenay he might devote himself, so long as the secret was kept, to every branch of knowledge. Nothing eluded his curiosity: an expert in law and theology, he acquired so deep an insight into medical science as set him above all his contemporaries. He became as ready as Pantagruel himself to discuss the insoluble problems of magic, alchemy, geomancy, and philosophy. He plumbed 'the true Well and Abyss of Encyclopedic learning.' But above all, he devoted himself to the study of Greek. He mastered the many authors whose works he was destined to quote with so fantastic an erudition; nor was his tasle' so simple as it might seem. He had to fight, not only with the scarcity of books and manuscripts, but with the bitterly declared prejudice of the age. Greek, in fact, was the forbidden tongue, the plain mark of heresy, and the controversy raged most bitterly during the years spent by Rabelais among the Grey Friars. Anti-Portraits: Poetics of the Face in Modern English, Polish and Russian Literature (1835-1965) is a study of a-physiognomic descriptions of the face. It demonstrates that writers such as George Eliot, Leo Tolstoy, Edgar Allan Poe, Nicolay Gogol, Virginia Woolf and Witold Gombrowicz vigorously resisted the belief that facial features reflect character. While other studies tend to focus on descriptions which affirm physiognomy, this book examines portraits which question popular face-reading systems and contravene their common premise – the surface-depth principle. Such portraits reveal that physiognomic formula is a cultural construct, invented to abridge, organise and regulate legibility of the human face. Most importantly, strange and ‘unreadable’ fictional faces frequently expose the connection between physiognomic judgement and stereotyping, prejudice and racism.

Differentiated book- It has a historical context with research of the time-This book contains a historical context, which helps us understand this literary work. We must pay special attention to those events that especially influenced the world of culture and art and also to those events that were especially reflected in literature, in the life of its writer or that affected it. There are many examples in which historical events have shaped the content and forms of literature, as well as this has often been the best testimony to the importance of certain events throughout history. This context is formed by everything that, in some way, influences the event when it happens. A fact is always tied to its time: that is, to its period.A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man is probably the most read work of all that Joyce wrote, although it is by no means the most interesting to critics if we compare it with the volumes of commentary generated by Ulysses and Finnegans Wake Its relative "simplicity" by comparison with the others makes it more appropriate to be part of the literature course programs, so that the Joycean experience of many readers begins with A Portrait. However, the simplicity of the Portrait is only apparent, since it has not only suffered the usual bibliographic avatars while different authors tried to establish a critical edition accepted by all, but the critical reception of the work itself has been extraordinarily controversial from the beginning.
