Cet ouvrage présente une analyse des anticipations d'inflation, telles qu'elles nous sont révélées par les résultats d'enquêtes sur l'opinion des individus (ménages et « spécialistes »). Il cherche à apporter des réponses aux questions suivantes : 1. Comment mesurer « le » taux d'inflation anticipé par les ménages (et les « spécialistes ») à partir des résultats d'enquêtes, notamment lorsque ces dernières reposent sur des questions attendant des réponses qualitatives ? 2. Comment se forment les anticipations d'inflation des ménages (et des « spécialistes ») ? Les individus tiennent-ils compte des seuls taux d'inflation passés, ou bien ajoutent-ils des informations différenciées ? 3. Quelle est l'importance des erreurs commises par les ménages (et les « spécialistes ») lorsqu'ils anticipent l'inflation future ? Ces erreurs sont-elles affectées par des biais systématiques ? Quid de l'hypothèse d'anticipations rationnelles au regard des erreurs d'anticipation ? 4. Existe-t-il une « forte » disparité entre les anticipations individuelles ou de groupes ? Comment expliquer ces disparités ? Les individus peuvent-ils moduler valablement leurs anticipations, suivant les horizons distingués caractérisant ces dernières ? Chacun de ces quatre groupes de questions fait l'objet d'un chapitre, contenant à la fois une analyse critique des contributions scientifiques de la littérature sur le sujet — dégageant les insuffisances et donc les voies de recherche paraissant pertinentes — et une analyse économétrique comparative entre les États-Unis et la France, propre à l'auteur de l'ouvrage, cherchant une avancée des connaissances en la matière (les deux aspects étant toujours soigneusement distingués). Cet ouvrage se préoccupe donc plus des anticipations, telles qu'elles sont, que des anticipations telles qu'elles devraient être pour s'accorder avec une théorie admise a priori. Les résultats obtenus ont des conséquences, tant pour l'analyse économique générale, que pour la conduite de la politique économique : tous concordent pour montrer que l'hypothèse stricte d'anticipations rationnelles ne s'accorde pas avec les anticipations d'inflation, telles qu'elles sont révélées par les enquêtes d'opinion.
