Developing work in the theories of action and explanation, Eldridge argues that moral and political philosophers require accounts of what is historically possible, while historians require rough philosophical understandings of ideals that merit reasonable endorsement. Both Immanuel Kant and Walter Benjamin recognize this fact. Each sees a special place for religious consciousness and critical practice in the articulation and revision of ideals that are to have cultural effect, but they differ sharply in the forms of religious-philosophical understanding, cultural criticism, and political practice that they favor. Kant defends a liberal, reformist, Protestant stance, emphasizing the importance of liberty, individual rights, and democratic institutions. His fullest picture of movement toward a moral culture appears in Religion within the Bounds of Mere Reason, where he describes conjecturally the emergence of an ethical commonwealth. Benjamin defends a politics of improvisatory alertness and consciousness-raising that is suspicious of progress and liberal reform. He practices a form of modernist, materialist criticism that is strongly rooted in his encounters with Kant, Hölderlin, and Goethe. His fullest, finished picture of this critical practice appears in One-Way Street, where he traces the continuing force of unsatisfied desires. By drawing on both Kant and Benjamin, Eldridge hopes to avoid both moralism (standing on sharply specified normative commitments at all costs) and waywardness (rejecting all settled commitments). Immanuel Kant's work changed the course of modern philosophy; in these essays Karl Ameriks examines how. He compares the philosophical system set out in Kant's Critiques with the work of the major philosophers before and after him (Descartes, Berkeley, Hume, Reid, Jacobi, Reinhold, the early German Romantics, Hegel, Feuerbach, and Marx). A systematic introduction argues that complexities in the interpretation of Kant's system led to a new emphasis on history, subjectivity, and aesthetics. This emphasis defined a distinctive interpretive style of philosophizing that has become especially influential and fruitful once again in our own time. The individual essays provide case studies in support of the thesis that late 18th-century reactions to Kant initiated an 'historical turn', after which historical and systematic considerations became joined in a way that fundamentally distinguishes philosophy from science and art, without falling back into mere historicism. In this way it is shown that philosophy's 'historical turn' is both similar to and unlike the turn to history undertaken by most other disciplines in this era. Part One argues that close attention to the historical context of Kant's philosophy is crucial to avoiding frequent misunderstandings that have arisen in comparing Kant with other major modern philosophers. Part Two contends that it was mainly the writing of Kant's first major interpreter that led to special philosophical emphasis on history in other major post-Kantian thinkers. Part Three argues that Hegel's system and its influence on post-Hegelians were determined largely by variations on Reinhold's historical turn. Part Four engages with major contemporary philosophers who have combined a study of particular themes in Kant and German Idealism with an appreciation for phenomena closely associated with the general notion of an historical turn in philosophy.

"The preoccupation with the "historicity" of thought and existence is central to the hermeneutic-phenomenological branch of modern philosophy. Its foremost representative is Martin Heidegger, who in his main work Sein und Zeit (1927) developed a theory of historicity, according to which human beings not only exist in history, but are themselves historical. In subsequent writings Heidegger argued that not only man, but also truth and being, must be understood "historically" in a particular sense. The meaning and the implications of Heidegger's "historicization" of philosophy are here analyzed along two parallel tracks: as a theory of the conditions of philosophical understanding; second, as an incentive to new ways of responding philosophically to these conditions. The study focuses on the sense of belonging which Heidegger assigns to historicity, as a dialogical relation to an enigmatic origin that cannot be exhaustively articulated, but to which understanding must nevertheless respond in repetition and critique. The idea of the "hermeneutic situation," and what it means to occupy such a situation, is shown to be central in this regard. Heidegger's "historicization" of the philosophical territory is interpreted as an exemplary attempt to preserve philosophy as a quest for "origins" in the explicit recognition of the interminable historical mediation of thinking. His approach leads to a critical questioning of fundamental philosophical distinctions, such as the temporal and the eternal, the absolute and the relative, subject and object, and of truth as correspondence. Eventually he is led to question the ability of language to express the historicity of thought and of being, which can only be indicated by means of concepts such as "moment" (Augenblick) and "event" (Ereignis). In seven chapters the theme of historicity is explored from different angles, which together provide a guide to Heidegger's path from a philosophy of life to a thinking of being in the "other beginning." "Poetry and philosophy from the time of Kant to the mid-twentieth century are centrally concerned with the question of how the Spirit - or the Holy Spirit - is present in the world. This book argues that the development of modern poetry in German and English can be seen as a protracted response to the religious crises of post-Idealist thought. The German tradition develops through poets such as Holderlin as much as through philosophers such as Hegel and Nietzsche, and in England German ideas profoundly influenced the British Idealist school. Cooper's compelling study makes parallel readings of German and English writers with deeper historically-based affinities than has previously been realised. Eduard Morike and Gerard Manley Hopkins, both churchmen, each studied Idealism as undergraduates in their respective countries: each responded to it in his spiritual verse. And we find similar parallels in two of the defining works of twentieth century poetry: between Rilke's response to Nietzsche in the Duino Elegies, and Eliot's response to Bradley in the Four Quartets.
