"Este escrito va destinado a estudiantes de derecho, sean de grado o de postgrado. Lo he titulado “Elementales” porque no es una monografía erudita que vaya plagada con notas a pie de página. Una nota al pie es, normalmente, un argumento de autoridad, y ahora no es el momento de la autoridad, sino el de mostrar lo más elemental. Porque a los seres humanos nos sucede con frecuencia que usamos una cosa, pero, incluso cuando la manejamos con maestría, no nos planteamos los principios que hacen posible lo que estamos haciendo. El jurista puede razonar porque conoce (o, al menos, piensa que conoce) las cosas, ya que la naturaleza de cada una presenta tanto elementos posibilitantes como limitaciones. Si alguien niega que podamos conocer lo que son las cosas, entonces no hay razonamiento jurídico posible. Como la filosofía moderna, la nominalista, es la que ha triunfado en el siglo XX, ante todo hay que examinar si estos empiristas o nominalista tienen razón.
