This text book is written keeping in mind the contents of the syllabus of the course ‘Agricultural Microbiology’ taught in BSc.(Ag) degree program all over the country as the syllabus is approved in Deans’ committee at ICAR level. The book will be useful for students and the teachers teaching the course. The book has five sections namely basics of microbiology which deals with fundamental principles of general microbiology. Section two covers ecology of soil biota and organisms in soil liter interfaces. Third section is biogeochemical cycles of plant nutrients discussing microbiological transformation of important plant nutrients and their movement in the soil constituents. Fourth section relates with applied aspect of agriculturally useful microorganisms dealing with biofertilizers and biocontrol agents. Fifth section discusses qualities of drinkable water and food and water borne diseases directly concerned with human hygiene. A chapter on traditional and molecular techniques to study soil microorganisms and their activities in situ and laboratory is also incorporated. The language of the book is simple and subject matter is discussed with help of illustration such as graphs, charts, tables and pictures, keeping readers in mind. In the end of each chapter exercise in the form of questions has been incorporated to help the student to recapitulate the contents of the chapter.

The use of microbial plant protection products is growing and their importance will strongly increase due to political and public pressure. World population is growing and the amount of food needed by 2050 will be double of what is produced now whereas the area of agricultural land is decreasing. We must increase crop yield in a sustainable way. Chemical plant growth promoters must be replaced by microbiological products. Also here, the use of microbial products is growing and their importance will strongly increase. A growing area of agricultural land is salinated. Global warming will increase this process. Plants growth is inhibited by salt or even made impossible and farmers tend to disuse the most salinated lands. Microbes have been very successfully used to alleviate salt stress of plants. Chemical pollution of land can make plant growth difficult and crops grown are often polluted and not suitable for consumption. Microbes have been used to degrade these chemical pollutants.

Excerpt from Principles of Soil Microbiology This book is a collection of known facts concerning microorganisms found in the soil and their activities; it is a study of the literature dealing with the science in question; it is an interpretation of the facts already presented; it indicates the various lines of investigation and notes where further information is especially wanted. Soil microbiology is a science which is at the very base of our understanding of agricultural processes and the practice of agriculture; it comprises a number of sciences. The book may, therefore, be looked upon more as an introduction to further research rather than as an ordinary text-book; as of help to those work ing in the allied sciences, who are desirous of obtaining some information concerning the soil population and its activities. If this volume will help to disclose to the reader some of the numerous interrelated processes in the soil, if it will present in a clearer light to the chemist, the physiologist, the botanist, the bacteriologist and the zoologist the nature of the many scientific and practical problems awaiting the investigator, if it contributes in a small measure toward making soil science an exact science, the author will feel that he has been amply rewarded. Excerpt from Agricultural Bacteriology: For Students in General Agriculture The art of agriculture has long been practised, but the science of agriculture is of comparatively recent origin. This science rests upon the fundamental sciences - chemistry, physics, and biology. One phase of biology, bacteriology, has within the last three decades assumed a most important relationship. The early researches of Pasteur, Koch, and their successors opened the field of inquiry as to the causation of animal disease. More recently, exact knowledge of the influence of microorganisms on soil processes, on dairying, and on foods in general has been greatly extended. It is of the utmost importance for the farmer and the student of agriculture to have a proper conception of these relations. The purpose of the text here presented is to give to the reader and to the student the essential facts concerning the relation of microorganisms to daily life, and especially to that of the farm, without a confusing mass of detail, both chemical and biological, the presentation of which often hides the essential information the student should gain. The terminology is simple. Descriptions of specific organisms have been avoided; and, in general, the various phases of the subject are presented in their broad outlines in order to acquaint the student with the fundamental principles, which can be applied to subjects not considered. A full conception of the relation of microorganisms to agriculture can not be gained without working with them in the laboratory. Without such experience the organisms remain intangible to the student. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
