Writing a book about play leads to wondering. In writing this book, I wondered first if it would be taken seriously and then if it might be too serious. Eventually, I realized that these concerns were cast in terms of the major dichotomy that I wished to question, that is, the very perva sive and very inaccurate division that Western cultures make between play and seriousness (or play and work, fantasy and reality, and so forth). The study of play provides researchers with a special arena for re-thinking this opposition, and in this book an attempt is made to do this by reviewing and evaluating studies of children's transformations (their play) in relation to the history of anthropologists' transformations (their theories). While studying play, I have wondered in the company of many individuals. I would first like to thank my husband, John Schwartzman, for acting as both my strongest supporter and, as an anthropological colleague, my severest critic. His sense of nonsense is always novel as well as instructive. I am also very grateful to Linda Barbera-Stein for her Sherlock Holmes style help in locating obscure references, checking and cross-checking information, and patience and persistence in the face of what at times appeared to be bibliographic chaos. I also owe special thanks to my teachers of anthropology-Paul J. Bohannan, Johannes Fabian, Edward T. Hall, and Roy Wagner-whose various orientations have directly and indirectly influenced the approach presented in this book.

Because few comparative data existed on European cultural tourism, when the European commission designated cultural tourism as a key area of tourism development in Europe, the European association for tourism and leisure education undertook a transnational study of European cultural tourism. The first five chapters address general themes (the scope and significance, the social context, the economic context and the political context of cultural tourism). The are followed by eleven chapters on individual countries from the European Union. Re-issued in 2005 in electronic format by ATLAS, the Association for Tourism and Leisure Education.

Politics In The Vernacular written by Will Kymlicka and has been published by OUP Oxford this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001-01-19 with Political Science categories.

This volume brings together eighteen of Will Kymlicka's recent essays on nationalism, multiculturalism and citizenship. These essays expand on the well-known theory of minority rights first developed in his Multicultural Citizenship. In these new essays, Kymlicka applies his theory to several pressing controversies regarding ethnic relations today, responds to some of his critics, and situates the debate over minority rights within the larger context of issues of nationalism, democratic citizenship and globalization. The essays are divided into four sections. The first section summarizes 'the state of the debate' over minority rights, and explains how the debate has evolved over the past 15 years. The second section explores the requirements of ethnocultural justice in a liberal democracy. Kymlicka argues that the protection of individual human rights is insufficient to ensure justice between ethnocultural groups, and that minority rights must supplement human rights. In particular, Kymlicka explores why some form of power-sharing (such as federalism) is often required to ensure justice for national minorities; why indigenous peoples have distinctive rights relating to economic development and environmental protection; and why we need to define fairer terms of integration for immigrants. The third section focuses on nationalism. Kymlicka discusses some of the familiar misinterpretations and preconceptions which liberals have about nationalism, and defends the need to recognize that there are genuinely liberal forms of nationalism. He discusses the familiar (but misleading) contrast between 'cosmopolitanism' and 'nationalism', and discusses why liberals have gradually moved towards a position that combines elements of both. The final section explores how these increasing demands by ethnic and national groups for minority rights affect the practice of democratic citizenship. Kymlicka surveys recent theories of citizenship, and raises questions about how they are challenged by ethnocultural diversity. He emphasizes the importance of education as a site of conflict between demands for accommodating ethnocultural diversity and demands for promoting the common virtues and loyalties required by democratic citizenship. And, finally, he explores the extent to which 'globalization' requires us to think about citizenship in more global terms, or whether citizenship will remain tied to national institutions and political processes. Taken together, these essays make a major contribution to enriching our understanding of the theory and practice of ethnocultural relations in Western democracies.

The Latin Civilization written by Feliks Koneczny and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-02-02 with categories.

898 pages. Koneczny never wrote a book on the Latin civilization but he wrote about the civilization in all his works. The present volume is a compilation of texts on the Latin civilization left by Koneczny. The Latin civilization is what is generally referred to as the Western civilization, but Koneczny preferred the term 'Latin' to include areas that were under the Romans, thus excluding Germany. The Latin civilization developed on the basis of Greek philosophy, Roman law and Christian ethic. It allows Church to interfere in state matters. It demands that all walks of life be under the same one and only ethic, the ethic of the Catholic Church, including state policies, which differs it from the Byzantine civilization (including Germany) that does not require states to be ethical. Some Protestant states, e.g. Britain, remained Latin because they consider ethic important also in state affairs and recognize subsidiarity. In Poland there are four civilizations struggling with each other, the Latin, the Turanian, the Byzantine and the Jewish. Koneczny believes that Poland, and most of Europe and Americas are primarily Latin and speaks for the defence of the Latin civilization against encroachments by others. He is a great propagator of the Latin civilization.

1100 pages. The Jewish civilization is one of the oldest on earth. It exists for four millennia and is likely to continue for a few more. It is defined by the ability of Jews to live among other civilizations and yet maintain a separate identity. What is this identity? Koneczny tries to answer this question in this volume. He points out that Jews have a double ethic, a different one in Palestine and a different one in the diaspora, a different one when dealing with Jews and a different one when dealing with gentiles. It struggles between monotheism and monolatry, the latter being a form of polytheism where there is a cult on one God and an acceptance that other peoples have other gods.Jews appear to be in all parties, on all sides of any conflict, but after the conflict is settled the Jews on the winning side make sure that no harm comes to Jews on the loosing site, regardless of what kind of believers or even atheists they are. This type of solidarity helps them to survive among the gentiles.

Provides a unique review of the major spatial aspects of transport systems, a detailed analysis of transport problems in urban and rural areas, an evaluation of social and environmental impacts, and a planning and policy overview. Divided into four parts, each considering a different aspect of transport geography. The first part outlines the basic geography of transport and examines transport and spatial structures, focusing upon the varying contributions made by transport to industrial, agricultural and urban development. Part two moves to consider specific transport systems at both national and international scales, drawing on studies from industrialised and developing nations and discussing the effects upon transport of the political changes in the former USSR and Eastern Europe. The third part examines some of the many problems of transport and urban and rural areas using specific examples to illustrate the contrasting difficulties and evaluate current urban transportation planning methods.
