Logo no Prefácio à 4ª edição deste livro [1891], Engels afirma que “o descobrimento da primitiva gens de direito materno como etapa anterior à gens de direito paterno dos povos civilizados, tem, para a história primitiva, a mesma importância que a teoria da evolução de Darwin para a biologia e a teria da mais-valia, enunciada por Marx, para a economia política“. A passagem revela sua rica filiação teórica e seu compromisso com a construção de uma rigorosa síntese dialética desde a origem da família, da propriedade privada e do estado. Objetivou, assim, a disposição de Marx em submeter as investigações de Morgan ao materialismo histórico e desmistificou a naturalização positivista da monogamia e do patriarcado. Para Engels, essa relação societal se manifesta como a primeira forma de escravização (sexual), mais, como a “forma celular da sociedade civilizada, na qual já podemos estudar a natureza das contradições e dos antagonismos que atingem seu pleno desenvolvimento nessa sociedade”. A opressão masculina coincide, portanto com a forma civilizatória definida pelos “interesses mais baixos, a cobiça vil, a brutal avidez de lucro, a soberba, o saque egoísta da propriedade comunal; [pelos] recursos mais infames, o roubo, a violação pela força, a fraude, a traição, os que minaram e destruíram a sociedade gentílica. E a nova sociedade, ao cabo de três mil anos de existência segue sendo e não tem sido mais do que a prosperidade de um punhado de homens a custa da imensa maioria de explorados e oprimidos”. Se essa crítica do progresso, originariamente fundado na propriedade privada das mulheres, já era arrasadora para as condições do século XIX, seu realismo é ainda mais flagrante para a atualidade. A prevalência destrutiva da acumulação hoje em vigor revela o esgotamento e o caráter irreformável desta forma civilizatória. Seu funcionamento finalmente rompe os limites entre civilização e barbárie impondo para toda a humanidade a urgência da alternativa socialista. Pois, a contribuição maior deste livro é desnudar, historicamente, que o êxito das mulheres, exploradas como tal e como trabalhadoras, é incompatível com a reprodução deste mundo. Daí a efetividade radical de sua luta revolucionária pela igualdade substantiva.
