The first complete English translation in 40 years. St John of the Cross is the supreme poet of the mystical tradition in Christianity. His poems are, quite simply, the most concise and beautiful expression of the experience of the love of God in Western literature. They are also the inspiration for his great prose works, which are extended commentaries on the poems. Many of these stem from his imprisonment in Toledo in 1577-8, from which he had a dramatic escape, taking refuge in a 'Discalced' (barefoot) Carmelite convent, where he apparently dictated poems from a notebook he had managed to bring out of prison. John was a man of his time and loved the literature, courtly and popular, of his age. Many of his poems reflect this in their imagery and metre. Others draw their inspiration from the Song of Songs in the Bible. So images of human love and nature make his poems readily accessible on an obvious level. But the 'divine' intention is always there, and this is the quality Kathleen Jones has sought to bring out in her translation: 'Considerations of rhyme and metre have been treated as secondary to the importance of precise theological expression, and of conveying something of the lyricism and spiritual power of the original.' Her main purpose is devotional, but her translation is a pleasure to read. The established Spanish text appears on left-hand pages with the English translation facing.

The Last Years Of Saint Th R Se written by Thomas R. Nevin and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-06-14 with Religion categories.

For over a century, the Carmelite Sister Thérèse of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face (1873-1897) has been revered as Catholicism's foremost folk saint of modern times. Universally known as "the Little Flower," she has been a source of consolation and uplift, an example of everyday sainthood by "the Little Way." This book puts aside that piety and addresses the torment of doubt within the life and writing of a saint best known for the strength of her conviction. Nevin examines the dynamics of Christian doubt, and argues that it is integral to the journey toward selfless love which Thérèse was compelled to take. What, Nevin asks, did doubt mean to her? What was its source and nature? What was its object? He gives close attention to her reading and interpretations of the Old and New Testaments as pathways through her inner wilderness. Her Carmel of spiritual sisters becomes a vivid setting for this drama, with other women challenging Thérèse by their own trials of faith. One of Thérèse's indispensable lessons, Nevin concludes, is the acceptance of one's helplessness in the midst of spiritual darkness. Bringing a new direction to the study of Thérèse, and of the challenges of sainthood itself, this book reveals how Thérèse's response to divine abandonment is a unique and painfully won imitation of Christ.
