L’auteur : le médecin général Jules Beyne (1880-1968) est connu comme le fondateur de la médecine aéronautique en France : grâce à lui l’expertise du personnel navigant, la recherche et l’enseignement ont été développés entre les deux guerres mondiales. Mais rares sont ceux qui ont connaissance des épreuves qu’il a partagées, en tant que médecin de son régiment, avec les braves du 283e régiment d’infanterie pendant 1501 jours de guerre. Ce sont les notes, brutes, dans l’état où il les a écrites au jour le jour, que nous présentons. Ces notes dont il disait « En dehors des souvenirs qu’elles fixent ou qu’elles évoquent pour moi, [elles] n’ont d’autre valeur que leur sincérité dans le moment où elles furent écrites ». Cependant, à travers ses réflexions, ses inquiétudes, ses doutes, ses interrogations, on comprend comment un acteur du drame a vécu et analysé le conflit. Il raconte la retraite éperdue des survivants de son régiment décimé dans le combat d’Eton en août 1914. Il dit avec un humour féroce l’absurdité de certaines missions « destinées à conquérir les plumes blanches » de certains grands chefs, exprime l’ennui et la mélancolie des longs jours d’attente. Il nous emmène dans les profondeurs de son poste de secours du secteur de Fleury près de Verdun, où des hommes hallucinés, sortis des peintures noires de Goya, suffoquent dans l’angoisse. Des photographies que Jules Beyne nous avait transmises illustrent ce récit complété par des cartes des champs d’opération successifs et des notes explicatives.

In sub-Saharan Africa, older people make up a relatively small fraction of the total population and are supported primarily by family and other kinship networks. They have traditionally been viewed as repositories of information and wisdom, and are critical pillars of the community but as the HIV/AIDS pandemic destroys family systems, the elderly increasingly have to deal with the loss of their own support while absorbing the additional responsibilities of caring for their orphaned grandchildren. Aging in Sub-Saharan Africa explores ways to promote U.S. research interests and to augment the sub-Saharan governments' capacity to address the many challenges posed by population aging. Five major themes are explored in the book such as the need for a basic definition of "older person," the need for national governments to invest more in basic research and the coordination of data collection across countries, and the need for improved dialogue between local researchers and policy makers. This book makes three major recommendations: 1) the development of a research agenda 2) enhancing research opportunity and implementation and 3) the translation of research findings.
