Modernity And Exclusion written by Joel S Kahn and has been published by SAGE this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001-08-09 with Social Science categories.

This penetrating book re-examines `the project of modernity'. It seeks to oppose the abstract, idealized vision of modernity with an alternative `ethnographic' understanding. The book defends an approach to modernity that situates it as embedded in particular and historical contexts. It examines cases of `popular modernism' in the United States, Britain and colonial Malaysia, drawing out the specific cultural and religious assumptions underlying popular modernism and concludes that modernism is implicated in a diversity of forms of cultural and racial exclusion.

Racism is a world problem. From Morocco to China, Brazil to Indonesia, racism is being debated and contested. Multiracism broadens the horizon on this global challenge, showing that racism has a diverse history with multiple roots and routes. Drawing on examples of racism from across the globe, with particular focus on cases from Asia and Africa, Alastair Bonnett rethinks the origins of racism and the connections between racism and modernity. Arguing that plural modernities are interwoven with plural racisms, he explores the relationship of racism to history, religion, politics, and nationalism, as well as to anti-Black prejudice and discourses of whiteness. Empirically rich, with numerous in-depth case studies, Multiracism equips readers to understand racism in a multipolar world where power is no longer the sole possession of the West. It provides and provokes a new, international, and post-Western vision of racism for the twenty-first century.

Written by a team of international scholars, the seventeen essays in this book collectively and critically reflect on the historical genesis of modern racism, from its constitution in early modernity, and its systematization in the Enlightenment period, to various forms of its popularization in modern society. This structure derives from the work of Wulf D. Hund, to whom this festschrift is dedicated. Inspired by his analysis of racialized discourses in European thought and global history, the book shows modern racism to be a mode of a negative societalization. The West has a unique civilization, a powerful front of modernity, liberty, democracy and affluence. This volume offers critical perspectives from both inside and outside the cultural and intellectual frontiers of the Western project. The primary focus is on analyzing racism and changing ethnicities in Europe and the US in the context of new forms of global dislocation, economic recession, the resurgence of neo-Fascism, and a widespread sense of the crisis of Western modernity. The chapters assess the value of Marxist perspectives and newer approaches that take modernity and postmodernity as frameworks for analysis. They also explore how European identities have been continually reconstructed by a cultural repression of the non-Western, whether through colonial discourses, the denial of Asian, Islamic, Judaic and African influences or the effects of Eurocentric conceptions of subjectivity in the psychiatric disciplining of ethnic minorities.

Based on the premise that the project of Western Modernity is a structuring element of our societies, Racism and Racial Surveillance explores in detail its legacies of coloniality and racialization that interfere in a subtle and perverse way in the current social, cultural and political systems. Guided by an interdisciplinary methodology, the various contributions privilege historical contexts of colonial formation and offer a thorough and intersectional analysis on the specters of coloniality in the upsurge of racism, surveillance, and criminalization, as well as the presence of the phantom of the race in spaces of knowledge production such as that of artistic field, forensic genetics and criminal identification. Drawing on multi case studies the book then proffers key concepts and historical background that will be of interest to researchers, students and professionals in a broad range of areas of social sciences and humanities research, including fields such as criminology and policing, science and technology studies, arts studies, literary studies, race and ethnic studies and, finally, memory studies. Chapters 8, 9 and 10 of this book is available for free in PDF format as Open Access from the individual product page at www.routledge.com. Modern Peoplehood written by John Lie and has been published by Global, Area, and International Archive this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-02 with Ethnicity categories.

"In Modern States, John Lie argues, ideas of race, ethnicity, and nationality can be subsumed under the rubric of "peoplehood." He argues, indeed, that the modern state has created the idea of peoplehood. That is, the seemingly primitive, atavistic feelings of belonging associated with ethnic, racial, and national identity are largely formed by the state. Not only is state responsible for the development and nurturing of these feelings, it is also responsible for racial and ethnic conflict, even genocide. When citizens think of themselves in terms of their peoplehood identity, they will naturally locate the cause of all troubles - from neighborhood squabbles to wars - in racial, ethnic, or national attitudes and conflicts." "Far from being transhistorical and transcultural phenomena, race, ethnicity, and nation, Lie argues, are modern notions - modernity here being associated with the rise of the modern state, the industrial economy, and Enlightenment ideas."--Jacket.

Antisemitism Racism And Islamophobia written by Christine Achinger and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-05-31 with Antisemitism categories.

The growing threat of antisemitism, racism and Islamophobia within the European political landscape poses urgent and difficult questions. These questions concern both commonalities and connections between these forms of prejudice and persecution, and differences regarding their discursive functions and the image of the ¿other¿ they project. In this volume we interrogate the specific forms which antiracism and anti-antisemitism take in the public sphere, their representation in scholarly discourses, and the fact that they increasingly seem to be at home in separate, and sometimes antagonistic, political and academic camps. We also address the conceptual resources and research tools required to study the unity that lies behind these varied phenomena. This collection has a new introduction and brings together papers that arose out of discussions in the European Sociological Association Network on Racism and Antisemitism, published in European Societies. The chapters relate to current issues in the area of racism and anti-Semitism such as the notable impact of the Israel-Palestine conflict on antisemitism in Europe, the contested ¿antizionist¿ humour of Dieudonn¿n France, relations between antisemitic and Islamophobic attitudes in Italy and Spain, the problem of antisemitic reactions to Islamophobia in Arab media, the historical relation of antisemitism to other kinds of racism in German literary discourse and how their study can be instructive for the investigation of antisemitism and Islamophobia today, the difficulties Marxists internationally have faced in addressing concerns about antisemitism, and current disconnections between racism and antisemitism in the human sciences. These papers raise fundamental issues of understanding the modern world. This book was originally published as a special issue of European Studies.
