The second book in a new seies, Self Perception brings together contemporary perspectives on individual differences in psychology. Drawing upon an international field of established and new researchers, the series presents both theoretical and applied work looking at individual difference in human performance. The re-appraisal of self perception is considered as part of the development of new thinking in the theory of self-reference. This includes models of self from the United States and the United Kingdom. The book goes on to explore recent research from around the globe. Not only are studies from Australia, Norway, and the United States examined but research from Greece and Kuwait is also explored. Varied topics are covered, including the effects of gender, self-esteem, and pupil self-perception in the academic context. Set within the framework of a conceptual synthesis of the research, the book offers a contemporary review of current thinking in the field. The contributors provide recent, relevant, and alternative perspectives for psychologists and applied scientists.

Performance in reading is affected by both academic and affective factors. If students are needed to perform well in reading, factors from both origins should be dealt with properly. The study used the RSPS (Reader self perception scale) to measure students' self perception as readers. Inter variable correlations have been observed significantly in the subscales, implying that they may impact students' reading performance. However, except the progress sub scale, the rest did not correlate with students' reading performance, referring that students may not have real perception of their reading achievement levels. Thus it could be concluded that students should be made engage in a variety of reading activities to enable them determine their reading performance level, which helps us make appropriate interventions. Since all the subscales on the RSPS correlate with one another, and Progress scale correlates with students' performance, all concerned bodies should work to raise them among students, so that reading performance is enhanced. Appropriate teaching procedures, when accompanied by proper handling of affective factors, reading performance is very likely to improve

The second article uses a grounded theory approach to examine responses given by 12 Black males in special education during a semi-structured interview about their reader self-perceptions and their understanding of special education and disabilities. Cross-case comparisons reveal that while some of the students did have low reader self-perceptions as readers and low reading ability, many of them had average to high reader self-perceptions in spite of their low reading ability. Additionally, many of the interviews reveal support for the Matthew Effects theory, while also highlighting additional issues at play in the reading achievement and self-perceptions of these students not accounted for by the theory.

Academic growth of all students should be the focus of education. The Measurement of Academic Progress (MAP) assessment measures academic growth and aligns to state standards. The purpose of this study was to understand students’ perceptions of themselves as readers. Another purpose of this study was to determine if there was a relationship between reader selfperceptions and their MAP reading scores. Student data was collected through individual interviews, student surveys, and MAP reading assessment scores. The major themes developed from the data were reading preferences, perceptions of reading assessment, reading at school, reading at home, and reading progress perceptions. In addition, the quantitative data derived from Lexile reading levels and student surveys are visually represented by bar graphs and scatter plots. Specifically, the findings include a section focused primarily on the possible relationship between reader self-perceptions and their MAP reading scores.
