Remarques sur le regard rassemble cinq essais consacrés, en des circonstances diverses, à quelques artistes ou théoriciens de l'art dans la première moitié du XXe siècle. Il s'est agi de comprendre, sur quelques cas particuliers mais de réelle importance, comment la création artistique de ces années s'est définie par rapport à deux options également fondamentales : d'une part un questionnement de l'existence et du monde par transgression des aspects conceptuels du langage, d'autre part une exploration des moyens propres de celui-ci et des systèmes de signes qui se développent sur ses marges. Giacometti et Picasso, respectivement, incarnent ces poétiques. Tu sais, mon vieux Jean-Pierre is inspired by the work of archaeologist Jean-Pierre Chrestien (1949–2008), who worked hand-in-glove with a generation of researchers in helping to unearth unexpected and always interesting aspects of New France. Contributions focus first upon the door to New France in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, Newfoundland and Acadia. A second set of essays move further up the St. Lawrence and into the heartland of the continent. The final section examines aspects of Canadian culture: popular art, religion and communication. François Couperin's contribution to the literature of baroque keyboard music has long been recognized. François Couperin and 'The Perfection of Music' updates and expands upon David Tunley's valuable 1982 BBC Music Guide to the composer, and examines the whole of Couperin’s output including the organ masses, motets and chamber music, in addition to the well-known works for harpsichord. Taking as its focal point Couperin's concept of the perfection of music through the union of the French and Italian styles, this book takes a more analytical approach to Couperin's work. Early chapters outline the main contrasting features of the two schools in the seventeenth- and early eighteenth-centuries, and it becomes clear that Couperin's expressive power owed much to his fusion of the polarities of the French classical tradition with that of the Italian baroque.
