A good narrative history, presented to a high standards. Many individual officers and men are mentioned in the text, also details of awards and casualties. After giving the expected summary of events in the 19th Century, the author devotes half of his pages to WWI (The Western Front, Egypt, and East Africa). There is also a complete chapter on the Third Afghan War (1919). An attractive book, readable, a good general account. Apps: list of former COs idem other officers (for the period 1849–1930, some with biographical details). 3 photos, one map.

Formed in 1851 by Irish immigrants, the Fighting Sixty-Ninth has served with distinction since the Civil War. This is a complete, illustrated history of the regiment's service in the Irish Brigade and the Rainbow Division. Functioning as the 1st Regiment, Irish Brigade, 2nd Corps, Army of the Potomac throughout the Civil War, the regiment made history at Malvern Hill, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, Petersburg and Appomatox. According to legend, an exasperated General Jackson cursed them as part of "that damn brigade." Functioning as the 165th Infantry, 42nd Division (Rainbow Division) throughout World War I, the regiment helped turn back the last German offensive, counterattacked at the Ourq river, spearheaded one of Pershing's pincers at St. Mihiel, and helped break the Hindenburg Line in the Argonne Forest. Today, the regiment is known as 1st Battalion, 69th Infantry (Mechanized), New York Army National Guard.

Excerpt from The Royal Grenadiers: A Regimental History of the 10th Infantry Regiment of the Active Militia of Canada Hen Britain, in 1760, found herself the undisputed mistress of Canada. There was the nucleus of a militia force in what is now the Province of Ontario, for there were a few French settlements at Fort Frontenac, Fort Rouille, Niagara and elsewhere, and wherever there was a French settlement there was a militia organization, for under the law of fiefs every able-bodied colonist was a member of the Provincial Militia. Immediately succeeding the conquest there was a cer tain in ux of immigration into Upper Canada, but it remained for the great upheaval of the American Revolution to furnish the province with her first set tlementof any great account. The story of the United Empire Loyalists, of their pathetic and noble loyalty, of their sacrifices, their hardships, and their settlement in what is now the Province of Ontario, is a part of the national history of this country, and a part which, it is hoped, will never be forgotten by the people of Canada.
