Tenía muy buen parecer en guerra, en paz, en policía y en razones de Estado. fue muy observante y muy religioso, dotado de notables y heroicas virtudes, porque era grande su humildad, su mansedumbre, su apacibilidad de condición, y el consejo y serenidad de su conciencia. Con estas prendas tan preciosas y ricas, vino a tener superioridad a todo el mundo. Ninguno le envidiaba ni quería mal, porque con ninguno tenía competencia; y aunque era docto, tan superior y aventajado en erudición, nunca se pudo acabar con él que imprimiese ni sacase a luz cosa alguna de sus preciosos trabajos; y aunque se han estampado algunas cosas suyas, no fue porque el Maestro las imprimiese, sino por la diligencia de algunos discípulos suyos curiosos, a los cuales pareció no era justo que doctrina tan importante quedase del todo sepultada. Toda su ciencia tuvo principio en la humildad; por lo que ha sido orden del cielo que todo cuanto después se ha impresado en materias escolásticas de Teología, se diga que es obra de sus manos. No sólo estos reinos, sino los extraños, publican y confiesan que las buenas letras y disciplina escolástica de que hoy goza España, se debe al Maestro Fray Francisco de Vitoria. (P. Fernández)Comprende este volumen cuatro de las relecciones, que hoy llamamos conferencias, impartidas por Francisco de Vitoria en su cátedra de Salamanca. En las dos primeras trata sobre "los indios recientemente hallados" y el supuesto derecho que ampara a los conquistadores para hacerles la guerra. No debieron agradar al Emperador, que asistió a ellas como un oyente más, si se juzga por la carta que luego ordenó remitir al orador. No en vano contenían un duro ataque a los excesos de los conquistadores en los territorios recién descubiertos.Otra relección versa sobre el matrimonio, lo cual tenía entonces una gran importancia por el deseo del rey inglés Enrique VIII de declarar nulo su enlace con Catalina de Aragón, cuyos derechos defendía la corte española. El Papa Clemente VII y el propio emperador pidieron consejo a la Universidad de Salamanca. Vitoria colaboró como miembro del claustro, pero luego pronunció esta relacción, que produjo, esta vez sí, muy grato efecto en el ánimo del Emperador.
