It was New Years Eve, 1980. My wife and I, my mom and dad, my sister and her husband, all went to a "Moonlight Bowl" at a local bowling alley. We had a great time laughing and joking together on that cold New Years Eve. After we celebrated the new year, I walked Mom and Dad to their car and told them I would see them in the morning. At 7:30 am on January 1, 1981, my mom called me and told me Dad had died in his sleep! We were all shocked! How could this happen? The night before, Dad was full of zest, joking and laughing. Now, he was dead!. I was 41, he was only 73. During the many days of the wake, funeral, and family gatherings, I had a chance to reflect on the memories of the many weekends fishing the rivers of northern Illinois with Dad. Of course, there were many side memories that spiraled through my mind including sleeping on the front porch in the spring, summer, and late fall, and how hard it was for Dad to wake me up. The early morning aromas of the baked goods Mom made every Saturday morning and those bacon and egg breakfasts in that old brick bungalow basement kitchen. The many problems we had with that one small bathroom including the hot water produced from that little side arm heater. The heat generated from that big coal fired "octopus" furnace. That 1935 Ford and its many mishaps. The numerous evenings playing catch on the front sidewalk with Dad. And, of course, the many Saturday fishing trips with Dad and his friend Fred. The learning process never ended, including catching bait, making line weights, building and extinguishing fires the proper way. Making that great cup of coffee in Dads "blue pot." Cleaning fish, fixing bicycles, the many long talks, and just plain having fun. Those memories in the warm, cold, rain, or shine from the man who gave me guidance, leadership, and direction, along with the edification received will be eternal.
