What happens when an entire community is moved? Dakota Crescent was one of Singapore's oldest public housing estates and a rental flat neighbourhood for low-income households. In 2016, its residents—many of whom are elderly—were relocated to Cassia Crescent to make way for redevelopment. To help them resettle, a group of volunteers came together and formed the Cassia Resettlement Team. They Told Us to Move tells the story of the relocation through interviews with the residents from the Dakota community and reflections by the volunteers. Accompanying these are essays by various academics on urban planning; gender and family; ageing, poverty, and social services; civil society and citizenship; and architectural heritage and place-making. Compulsory land acquisition and involuntary displacement of communities for a larger public purpose captures the tension of development in the modern state, with the need to balance the interests of the majority while protecting the rights of the minority. In India, informal estimates of involuntary resettlement are estimated to be around 50 million people over the last five decades, and three-fourths of those displaced still face an uncertain future. Growing public concern over the long-term consequences of this has led to greater scrutiny of the rehabilitation and resettlement process, particularly for large development projects. This book examines a number of new policy formulations put in place at both the central and state levels, looking at land acquisition procedures and norms for rehabilitation and resettlement of communities. The book combines a theoretical analysis of the proposed regulatory framework with detailed case studies that examine the application of these norms in specific geographic contexts across the country. Suburbanization has homogenized the development and organization of rural communities in North America and around the globe. By focusing primarily on providing automotive circulation characterized by low population density, the utility and amenity networks required to support communities are stretched to undesirable limits (sprawl) that can negatively impact local economies, natural resources and opportunities for active pedestrian movement. Homogenized building processes can also lead to a loss of architectural reference to communities' sense of place formed by their unique histories, landscapes and cultures. This thesis looks to repair those frayed connections through architectural intervention by thinking of a locale's unique attributes first and then responding with regionally sensitive design complemented by a pedestrian focused plan. By creating a visually discernible and tactile celebration of culture and history, communities can reintroduce, enhance and update ways of life that are more applicable to their immediate environment, can foster higher levels of self-sufficiency and can encourage an engaging and social community organized to accept and adopt technological changes of the near and distant future.

The resettlement of the Negev Bedouin (Israel) has been wrought with controversy since its inception in the 1960s. Presenting evidence from a two-decade period, the author addresses how the changes that took place over the past sixty to seventy years have served the needs and interests of the State rather than those of Bedouin community at large. While town living fostered improvements in social and economic development, numerous unintended consequences jeopardized the success of this planning initiative. As a result, the Bedouin community endured excessive hardship and rapid change, abandoning its nomadic lifestyle and traditions in response to the economic, political, and social pressure from the State—and received very little in return.
