This book contributes to the recent theoretical developments in the area of mutual interactions of valency and aspect, as expressed in different types of verb-related nominal structures (nominalizations and synthetic compounds). A wide range of data from Slavic, Hellenic, Germanic, Romance and Semitic languages provides an empirical testing ground for competing theoretical explanations couched in the lexicalist and construction-based frameworks.

""The Fabric of Resistance" documents the impact of Spanish colonial institutions of labor on identity and social cohesion in Peru. Through archaeological and historical lines of evidence, it examines the long-term social conditions that enabled the large-scale rebellions in the late Spanish colonial period in Peru (1780s-1820s). Hu argues that, despite the Spanish government's emphasis on divide-and-control, workers of diverse backgrounds actively resisted proscriptions against intercaste mixing. This cultural mixing underpinned the coordinated nature of late colonial rebellions. Archaeological perspectives are lacking on what were the largest and most cosmopolitan indigenous-led rebellions of the Americas, so this book fills an important gap and provides fresh perspectives and arguments on a perennially important subject"--

It reflects an intimate knowledge of events during this period and provides a detailed focus on the Timorese people and their leaders who struggled to lay a foundation for a free, peaceful and democratic nation. The book’s central theme is that of the commitment of national leaders to national interest, rather than the establishment of perfect institutional mechanisms that determines the success of a post-conflict country in achieving its stability.

Resist, Organize, Transform: An Introduction to Nonviolence and Activism is designed to help students develop into effective, nonviolent social change agents. The text draws from and contributes to a tradition of nonviolent struggle grounded in Beloved Community, and invites students to find meaning and orientation in that approach. The anthology strategically guides readers through a dynamic process of visioning the future, understanding the systems at work, becoming a change agent, and engaging in nonviolent social change. In Section I, students read selected works by historical activists, as well as contemporary thinkers and activists, who have forged the way for nonviolent social change. Section II helps readers cultivate a deeper understanding of the complex systems at work in our lives and how those systems connect us to one another. In Section III, the readings offer tools, examples, theories, and principles to nurture students' personal and ongoing development into agents of change. The final section provides guideposts and conversations for creating social change in a real, authentic, and effective way. Featuring inspirational and evocative insight from activists and scholars past and present, Resist, Organize, Transform is an ideal text for courses in social justice and peace and conflict studies. We Resist written by Cynthia Levine-Rasky and has been published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-05-21 with Political Science categories.

The 2016 US presidential election exposed rising xenophobic and nationalist sentiment within the United States and other democratic countries. As populist movements grow, democratic freedoms erode. We Resist demonstrates that the things we often take for granted - safety, family, employment, health, a promising future - are under attack, and we must fight to preserve these resources before it's too late. We are currently witnessing the dismantlement of social programs, growing disinterest in international cooperation, and the devaluation of evidence-based knowledge. This disturbing shift in politics is leading to increased national security measures, violations to basic human rights, and widening social and economic inequalities. The rise of far-right populism brings with it intolerance of ethnic, sexual, and all other minority groups, and a rejection of democratic society. We Resist gathers the compelling perspectives of scholars and activists who are deeply embedded within political and community struggles, who participate in policy decisions, and who are engaged in research that advances those struggles. An essential and timely book, We Resist confronts the problems we face as a human community and impels a cross-sectoral movement to defend our rights and revitalize the common good.

Our world is full of ideas about the way that humans should live. Some of these ideas create a more beautiful and equal world that we all want to live in, while other ideas create violence, hatred, inequality, and suffering. Some of us care an awful lot about beautiful ideas; we care enough to fight for them and spend our lives working towards them, and we care enough to resist. Resistance takes many forms, however, and there are many ideas about the most effective and correct ways to resist."Elements of Resistance" attempts to transcend the false binary of nonviolent and violent resistance, and looks at the heart and soul of what it means to resist, why we resist, and what some different methods of effective resistance might look like. Drawing from recent work by social theorists and activists such as Derrick Jensen, Ward Churchill, Shane Claiborne, Johann Galtung, and Peter Gelderloos, as well as the work of Frantz Fanon, Henry Thoreau, Martin Luther King, Jr., Nelson Mandela, and Mohandas Gandhi, this book is an exploration into the history, theory, and necessity of resistance to oppression.
