Wagner was more than a composer--he was a cultural phenomenon. The author seeks to explain this phenomenon. One claim is that Wagner's music dramas served to provide encouragement and inspiration to Victorians struggling with the problems of a changing and challenging era. Intellectual developments (including the theories of Charles Darwin and the impact of historical scholarship on Biblical studies) had struck a severe blow against religious orthodoxy. Thus, the English strove to retain their inherited or instinctive beliefs and at the same time to accept the conclusions of natural and social science. Frustrated by the academic arguments, many persons turned to less intellectual substitutes, including Wagnerism. Almost all of Wagner's plots involve some form of redemption and hunger for the infinite. The author also claims that Wagnerism drew on the Victorian need for social justice, and points out that just as many Wagnerians sought emancipation from confining materialist philosophies or simply delighted in sexual liberation.

The popularity of The Lord of the Rings echoes a similar work about a ring with magical powers. This work is known as The Ring of the Nibelung, and it consists of four separate operas. Also known as the Ring Cycle, it was the crowning point of the career of the 19th century German composer Richard Wagner. Wagner was somewhat of a late bloomer in music. His first major composition was performed when he was nearly 30, and the Ring Cycle premiered when he was 53. While Richard Wagner was among the world's greatest composers, he was not a particularly good person. He didn't repay borrowed money, he bore grudges against people who had done favors for him, he was unfaithful to his first wife, and he took his second wife away from her husband. He remains fascinating and controversial today. Tens of thousands of books and articles have been written about him.

With their complex textures, rich harmonies, and elaborate use of leitmotifs, the operas of German composer Richard Wagner (1813–83) remain some of the most influential—and contentious—in the history of the genre. But while he won renown with what he achieved on the stage, his life was marked by political exile, turbulent love affairs, and poverty. And because Wagner and his music are exceedingly intertwined with the great upheavals of his time, it is difficult to produce an impartial assessment of his output. Appearing at the bicentennial of his birth, Richard Wagner provides a clear and balanced view of both Wagner’s great successes and the controversies generated by his life and art. Using Wagner’s wide-ranging engagement with mythology as a starting point, Raymond Furness explores the composer’s music and prose writings. He delves deeply into Wagner’s essential operas, such as The Ring and Tristan and Isolde, offering fascinating insight into these works. Because the great operatic pieces often overshadow the rest of Wagner’s compositions, Furness also considers neglected fragments like “Wieland the Smith,” “The Mines at Falun,” and “The Visitors,” producing a more rounded critical picture of the composer. With up-to-date dissections of recent Bayreuth productions and a refreshingly uncluttered approach to a much-misunderstood life, Richard Wagner is an engaging look at one of music’s most beguiling figures.

"Wagner, His Life and Works is one of the first sympathetic biographies of Wagner, written at a time when his revolutionary works were regarded with ridicule and hostility by a majority of his contemporaries. The reader will follow Richard Wagner in his career, from the conventional early works to the late masterworks, which created a new musical language. This volume tells of the struggle Wagner fought to win a fair hearing for his works, as well as the way these innovative works were received by the public. Wagner's stormy personal life, from his scandalous elopement with the married daughter of the great Franz Lizt to his vocal philosophical battles with both friends and enemies, is also chronicled. Here the reader will find a contemporary portrait of Wagner written by Adolphe Jullien (1845-1932), a noted music critic and tireless champion of what was then regarded as modern music. About Jullien and this book on Wagner, The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians states: "(This) substantial biography of Wagner was for its time a monument of accurate and erudite information and is on the whole a just review of his works...This Paganiniana edition adds numerous illustrations to the original wealth of caricatures and illustrations, thereby making the text of even greater value. It will appeal to the general reader, who will be both amused and informed, and to the musical scholar, who will find it a rare source of period information."--Publisher's description.

An investigation of the considerable influence of Wagner's stay in Zurich from 1849 to 1858 -- a period often discounted by scholars -- on his career. When the people of Dresden rose up against their king in May 1849, Richard Wagner went from Royal Kapellmeister to republican revolutionary overnight. He gambled everything, but the rebellion failed, and he lost all. Now a wantedman in Germany, he fled to Zurich. Years later, he wrote that the city was "devoid of any public art form" and full of "simple people who knew nothing of my work as an artist." But he lied: Zurich boasted arguably the world's greatest concentration of radical intellectuals and a vibrant music scene. Wagner was accepted with open arms. This book investigates Wagner's affect on the musical life of the city and the city's impact on him. Mathilde Wesendonck emerges not as Wagner's passive muse but as a self-assured woman who exploited gender expectations to her own benefit. In 1858, Wagner had to flee Zurich after again gambling everything -- this time on Mathilde -- and again losing. But it was in Zurich that Wagner wrote his major theoretical works; composed Das Rheingold, Die Walküre, and parts of Siegfried and Tristan und Isolde; first planned Parsifal; held the first festival of his music; and conceived of a theater to stage his own works. If Wagner had been free in 1849 to choose a city in which to seek heightened intellectual stimulation among the like-minded and the similarly gifted, he could have come to nomore perfect place. Chris Walton teaches music history at the Musikhochschule Basel in Switzerland. He is the recipient of the 2010 Max Geilinger Prize honoring exemplary contributions to the literary and cultural relationship between Switzerland and the English-speaking world.
