Robert Charles Benchley was born on September 15th, 1889 in Worcester, Massachusetts. Benchley wrote over 600 essays and is a humorist best known for his work for Vanity Fair and The New Yorker. These essays, which ranged from topical to the absurdist, influenced many modern humorists. His humor was obvious from the time he attended Harvard University and was a writer for Harvard Lampoon. Benchley seemed to have an effortless way of creating humour and was equally famous for his work writing and appearing in short films, feature films and radio work. He was also a founder of the famous Algonquin Round Table at the New York hotel. This group, including Benchley, Dorothy Parker and George S Kaufman expanded to over a dozen regular members who met for lunch on an almost daily basis between 1919 and 1929. They dubbed themselves "The Vicious Circle." The group first gathered in the Algonquin's Pergola Room (later called the Oak Room) at a long rectangular table. As the gatherings increased in number, the Algonquin manager Frank Case moved them to the Rose Room and a round table. Daily association with each other, both at the luncheons and outside of them, inspired members of the Circle to collaborate creatively. The entire group worked together successfully only once, however, to create a revue called No Sirree! which helped launch a Hollywood career for Benchley. His legacy in Hollywood includes his short film How to Sleep which was a popular success and won Best Short Subject at the 1935 Academy Awards. He also acted with many memorable appearances in feature films such as Alfred Hitchcock's Foreign Correspondent (1940) and Nice Girl? (1941). In Hollywood he worked for many of the major studios and as an actor was often called upon to create humorous points where either a plot could be explained or something that required explaining could be used as a clotheshorse for jokes. In essence a screen image was established as a comic lecturer who tried but failed to clarify any given topic. Whilst Benchley was highly paid and sought after it seemed to leave him less and less time to write the things he cared about. Benchley's drinking, already a problem, had worsened over the years, until he was diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver. (Ironically, when younger, he had been a devoted teetotaler.) Robert Charles Benchley died in a New York hospital on November 21st, 1945. His funeral was a private family affair, and his body was cremated and interred in a family plot on the island of Nantucket.

When Robert Benchley died in 1945, his obituaries read like love-letters from the world. Here is a collection of his short, whimsical, hilarious articles which show why. With befuddled and heroic bewilderment Benchley faces his problems. Among others are the mislaid locomotive, a dachshund who sued for libel, and a songbird who was “out to get” Benchley. It ends with five sizzling chapters of his “Untold Story,” starting when, as an innocent young man from the country (Boston), he arrived in the city (New York) looking for pitfalls. (It was a holiday and they were all closed.) “...it is a saga of the gaga, and probably not far from his masterpiece.”—New York Times A rare gem of a book! Illustrated by Gluyas Williams

Provoking The Press written by Kevin M. Lerner and has been published by University of Missouri Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-05-24 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

At the beginning of the 1970s, broadcast news and a few newspapers such as The New York Times wielded national influence in shaping public discourse, to a degree never before enjoyed by the news media. At the same time, however, attacks from political conservatives such as Vice President Spiro Agnew began to erode public trust in news institutions, even as a new breed of college-educated reporters were hitting their stride. This new wave of journalists, doing their best to cover the roiling culture wars of the day, grew increasingly frustrated by the limitations of traditional notions of objectivity in news writing and began to push back against convention, turning their eyes on the press itself. Two of these new journalists, a Pulitzer Prize—winning, Harvard-educated New York Times reporter named J. Anthony Lukas, and a former Newsweek media writer named Richard Pollak, founded a journalism review called (MORE) in 1971, with its pilot issue appearing the same month that the Times began publishing the Pentagon Papers. (MORE) covered the press with a critical attitude that blended seriousness and satire—part New York Review of Books, part underground press. In the eight years that it published, (MORE) brought together nearly every important American journalist of the 1970s, either as a writer, a subject of its critical eye, or as a participant in its series of raucous "A.J. Liebling Counter-Conventions"—meetings named after the outspoken press critic—the first of which convened in 1974. In issue after issue the magazine considered and questioned the mainstream press's coverage of explosive stories of the decade, including the Watergate scandal; the "seven dirty words" obscenity trial; the debate over a reporter's constitutional privilege; the rise of public broadcasting; the struggle for women and minorities to find a voice in mainstream newsrooms; and the U.S. debut of press baron Rupert Murdoch. In telling the story of (MORE) and its legacy, Kevin Lerner explores the power of criticism to reform and guide the institutions of the press and, in turn, influence public discourse.
