Few readers of Robert Burns' poetry appreciate the rigors of the farming life to which he was brought up. Farming in Ayrshire, Scotland in the late 18th century involved an arduous and demanding routine. The domestic architecture, the equipment, the animals, the techniques, the whole way of life, are all present in the most detailed and intimate way in Burns' poetry. Reading Gavin Sprott's account of all this, with its precise detail and its careful pointing to the reflection of the farming life in the poetry, we are given a new awareness of the context and meaning of what Burns wrote. The book is beautifully illustrated with drawings, photographs, and examples of Burns' writing in his own hand.

The farmer’s boy from Ayrshire who went on to be the most acclaimed of all Scottish poets, celebrated around the world, Robert Burns is a greater and more varied artist than those that know him only through annual Burns’ Suppers and choruses of his ‘Auld Lang Syne’ at New Year could imagine. This new selection by Ian Rankin of verses and lyrics from Scotland’s national poet, the ‘Heaven-taught ploughman’, reveals a writer capable of evoking tremendous sympathetic power from his readers and with an easy, astonishing command of the sounds and rhythms of both standard English and the evocative Scots tongue. It also reveals an artist of incredible range. His ‘Tam O’ Shanter’, with its midnight pursuit of witches from a grisly graveyard dance, is gripping, fantastical and funny in equal measure, ‘Is there for honest poverty’ beautifully expresses the egalitarian spirit by which Burns became a political hero for so many, and sentiments both romantic (‘Ae Fond Kiss’) and bawdy (‘The Fornicator’) co-exist in this canny selection of the best of the Scottish Bard.

The farmer collection is the first of three books, which are an assembly of stories for children inspired by Robert Burns Poems. The Farmer Collection has four stories, Bug Off, The Farmer and the Field Mouse, The Day my Pet Died and The Farmer's Favourite Old Horse. There is no attempt at using rhyme in the stories and they are not constrained by what is in the original poems. They are enjoyable stories with uncomplicated dialogue and are well illustrated. That is the main portion of the book. At the back of the book we have included the original Burns poems. To ease the reading and understanding of some of Burns old Scots words we have put a line by line interpretation of the meaning. We expect that this will be too complicated for a child to read on their own but it will enable reading with a more mature member of the family. It is our hope that exploring these poems in this way will awaken an appreciation of Burns work and lead to a desire to find out more. At least more in the other two books of this series.

Excerpt from Robert Burns: The Poet of the People Robert Burns, the Poet of the People, was born in a cottage on the banks of the Doon, about two miles from Ayr, on the 25th of Jan uary, 1759. His father was servant to a gentle man who lived near Ayr. In his twenty-third year Robert Burns joined a Flax-dresser named Irwin with a view of learning the trade. A dis astrous fire put an end to this scheme, and left the poet penniless and without a trade. Later on he joined his brother and became a farmer. On the failure of the farming, Burns began to publish his poems. He soon attracted the at tention of prominent men of letters, and nota bly the patronage of the Earl of Glencairn. In February, 1788, he took the farm at Ellisland on the banks of the Nith. Shortly after this he married his darling Jean. In 1789 he was appointed an officer of Excise. In 1791 he removed to Dumfries. Here he made many enemies by his strongly expressed sentiments concerning the French Revolution. His oft repeated opinions nearly lost him his position. He was retained in office after a very severe repri mand. This stern reproof embittered his proud Spirit. Sickness overtook him. He went fora. 'Oh would some power the gift give us, to see ourselves as others see us!' Robert Burns Robert Burns, poet and lyricist, also known as Rabbie Burns, is widely regarded as the National Poet of Scotland - and much of his work has become part of everyday modern language: 'The best laid schemes o' mice and men...' 'To see her is to love her...' Often credited with writing the lyrics for Auld Lang Syne, he almost single-handedly inspired the movement that preserved Scottish music and lyrics which had been handed down the generations vocally for centuries, thereby maintaining Scots culture and language. A cultural icon and pioneer of the Romantic movement, Burns was chosen as the greatest Scot in a 2009 poll. This collection includes some of his best-loved, most beautiful work. 'Now's the day, now's the hour' Robert Burns
