Many years of practical experience in teaching discrete mathematics form the basis of this text book. Part I contains problems on such topics as Boolean algebra, k-valued logics, graphs and networks, elements of coding theory, automata theory, algorithms theory, combinatorics, Boolean minimization and logical design. The exercises are preceded by ample theoretical background material. For further study the reader is referred to the extensive bibliography. Part II follows the same structure as Part I, and gives helpful hints and solutions. Audience:This book will be of great value to undergraduate students of discrete mathematics, whereas the more difficult exercises, which comprise about one-third of the material, will also appeal to postgraduates and researchers.

The main purpose of this book is to provide help in learning existing techniques in combinatorics. The most effective way of learning such techniques is to solve exercises and problems. This book presents all the material in the form of problems and series of problems (apart from some general comments at the beginning of each chapter). In the second part, a hint is given for each exercise, which contains the main idea necessary for the solution, but allows the reader to practice theechniques by completing the proof. In the third part, a full solution is provided for each problem. This book will be useful to those students who intend to start research in graph theory, combinatorics or their applications, and for those researchers who feel that combinatorial techniques mightelp them with their work in other branches of mathematics, computer science, management science, electrical engineering and so on. For background, only the elements of linear algebra, group theory, probability and calculus are needed.

Excerpt from Problems and Exercises in Economics This book of problems and exercises, originally prepared for the use of students in the University of Minnesota, has been thoroughly revised and enlarged for the present edition. It is designed to serve teachers and students in the Principles of Economics by furnishing illustrative problems and exercises in convenient form. It is believed that the use of such problems will tend to accomplish the following results: (1) Illustrate the principles of the science and the subject-matter of the text. (2) Form a basis for class discussions, and for discussions by students outside of class. (3) Promote close thinking on the part of the student. (4) Encourage students to read more critically. (5) Stimulate interest in the subject. The problem method succeeds best when certain problems are assigned for written exercises, the papers read and returned to the student, with errors indicated, to be corrected and returned to the instructor. Exercises And Problems In Mathematical Methods Of Physics written by Giampaolo Cicogna and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-03-21 with Science categories.

This book presents exercises and problems in the mathematical methods of physics with the aim of offering undergraduate students an alternative way to explore and fully understand the mathematical notions on which modern physics is based. The exercises and problems are proposed not in a random order but rather in a sequence that maximizes their educational value. Each section and subsection starts with exercises based on first definitions, followed by groups of problems devoted to intermediate and, subsequently, more elaborate situations. Some of the problems are unavoidably "routine", but others bring to the fore nontrivial properties that are often omitted or barely mentioned in textbooks. There are also problems where the reader is guided to obtain important results that are usually stated in textbooks without complete proofs. In all, some 350 solved problems covering all mathematical notions useful to physics are included. While the book is intended primarily for undergraduate students of physics, students of mathematics, chemistry, and engineering, as well as their teachers, will also find it of value.

This third edition is a revised, updated, and greatly expanded version of previous edition of 2001. The 1300+ exercises contained within are not merely drill problems, but have been chosen to illustrate the concepts, illuminate the subject, and both inform and entertain the reader. A broad range of subjects is covered, including elementary aspects of probability and random variables, sampling, generating functions, Markov chains, convergence, stationary processes, renewals, queues, martingales, diffusions, Lvy processes, stability and self-similarity, time changes, and stochastic calculus including option pricing via the Black-Scholes model of mathematical finance. The text is intended to serve students as a companion for elementary, intermediate, and advanced courses in probability, random processes and operations research. It will also be useful for anyone needing a source for large numbers of problems and questions in these fields. In particular, this book acts as a companion to the authors' volume, Probability and Random Processes, fourth edition (OUP 2020).

This book is intended for the Mathematical Olympiad students who wish to prepare for the study of inequalities, a topic now of frequent use at various levels of mathematical competitions. In this volume we present both classic inequalities and the more useful inequalities for confronting and solving optimization problems. An important part of this book deals with geometric inequalities and this fact makes a big difference with respect to most of the books that deal with this topic in the mathematical olympiad. The book has been organized in four chapters which have each of them a different character. Chapter 1 is dedicated to present basic inequalities. Most of them are numerical inequalities generally lacking any geometric meaning. However, where it is possible to provide a geometric interpretation, we include it as we go along. We emphasize the importance of some of these inequalities, such as the inequality between the arithmetic mean and the geometric mean, the Cauchy-Schwarz inequality, the rearrangementinequality, the Jensen inequality, the Muirhead theorem, among others. For all these, besides giving the proof, we present several examples that show how to use them in mathematical olympiad problems. We also emphasize how the substitution strategy is used to deduce several inequalities.
