The Rose Girl is Fay Howison’s debut children’s book. Set in the pre-industrial past, the book follows the story of two families living at opposite ends of an idyllic valley. At one end of the valley is the forbidding Duke of Ashbury, stricken with grief after the death of his wife. He keeps his daughter, Rosalba, a virtual prisoner in their magnificent home, lest harm should come to her too. At the other end of the valley live the cheerful and unconventional Paget family. When the three Paget brothers learn of Rosalba’s plight, they each hatch a secret plan to rescue her from her father’s clutches. The Paget brothers’ efforts to save the young woman lead them into various misadventures, including an encounter with the dark menacing figure of Lord Jasper Culpepper. Then the discovery of a terrible secret from the past means that the brothers must forget their rivalry for Rosalba’s heart, and work together to defeat the formidable problems they now face. Will the brothers be able to overcome their differences and save Rosalba? The Rose Girl is the first book in a trilogy that follows the Paget brothers and their friends on their adventures in an imaginary country, not unlike England. Fay’s debut book takes inspiration from traditional fairytales, but modernises the genre to make it more accessible and relatable to young girls. Fay’s book will be enjoyed by young readers generally, and will appeal specially to girls aged 10-14 who like the romantic-comedy genre. Praise for The Rose Girl: “As soon as I read the prologue, I thought to myself, I am not putting this down for a moment!” – Sophia, aged 11 “It is gripping, funny and always exciting. I recommend it to everyone.” – Jessie, aged 12

As addictive and intoxicating as the perfect martini. Don't start reading unless you have cancelled all your plans.' - Sarah Bailey, author of The Dark Lake and Where the Dead Go Identical twins only look the same ... Beautiful twin sisters Iris and Summer are startlingly alike, but beyond what the eye can see lies a darkness that sets them apart. Cynical and insecure, Iris has long been envious of open-hearted Summer's seemingly never-ending good fortune, including her perfect husband, Adam. Called to Thailand to help sail the family yacht to the Seychelles, Iris nurtures her own secret hopes for what might happen on the journey. But when she unexpectedly finds herself alone in the middle of the Indian Ocean, everything changes. Now is her chance to take what she's always wanted - the idyllic life she's always coveted. But just how far will she go to get the life she's dreamed about? And how will she make sure no one discovers the truth? Written with the chilling suspense of The Girl on the Train and Before I Go to Sleep, The Girl in the Mirror is an addictive thriller about greed, lust, secrets and deadly lies. 'Immensely entertaining, hugely original, highly recommended. Rose Carlyle takes the reader on a wild ride, across an ocean and into the depths of a family riven by greed, jealousy and subterfuge . . . Like sorbet for the jaded palates of hardcore thriller fans.' - Chris Hammer, author of Scrublands and Silver 'Ferociously entertaining. A novel like a triathlon: part evil-twin thriller, part howdunit (or did-she-do-it?), part juicy family drama. Drop Knives Out and Double Indemnity into the blender, shake some Dead Calm over the froth, power it on, and you've got a cocktail like The Girl in the Mirror - fresh, flavourful, and utterly intoxicating.' - A.J. Finn, No. 1 New York Times bestselling author of The Woman in the Window 'A young woman tries to outrun the secrets that her own actions create. The thrill of the chase gathers us up and pulls us through each page to the very last. And in that other game of pursuit, the author matching wits with the reader, Rose Carlyle is always one step ahead. Of The Girl in the Mirror's many surprises, the biggest is that such an expert psychological thriller, such an addictive ride, could be a debut.' - Malcolm Knox, author of The Life and Bluebird 'Rose Carlyle's debut psychological suspense The Girl in the Mirror left me gobsmacked. With its exotic setting, incredibly drawn characters, masterfully intricate plot, and an ending I absolutely did not see coming, Carlyle doesn't just knock the ball out of the park-she sends it flying into the next universe. The Girl in the Mirror is a triumph, one of the best books I've read all year.' - Karen Dionne, bestselling author of The Marsh King's Daughter and The Wicked Sister 'A page-turner that's delightfully over-the-top, shocking, and full of twists, The Girl in the Mirror takes sibling rivalry to the next level. A jaw-dropping debut.' - Stephanie Wrobel, author of Darling Rose Gold 'Rose Carlyle's The Girl in the Mirror took my breath away, page after page. It has it all: A superbly taut plot. Unforgettable, haunting characters. A setting that will instantly transport you to the lush landscape of the Seychelles. And one of the best endings I've read in a very long time. Bottom line-this book is exactly what we're all craving right now: a delicious, perfect escape.' - Aimee Molloy, New York Times bestselling author of The Perfect Mother 'Riveting from the first page to the last, with a final mind-blowing twist you'll never see coming!' - Liv Constantine, author of The Last Mrs Parrish

Little Rose Brezina had everything an 8-year-old girl living in the 1940s needed. Her extended family living in the same Vienna apartment building, summers on her uncle's farm, and a cheerful spirit that brought joy into every experience. That spirit would soon be tested, though, as the Nazi army moved in and war came to her city. Before she would even reach her teens, Rose would lose her best friend, join an underground effort to hide Jews, and suffer repeated torture by a Gestapo determined to break her. And yet even though her home would be destroyed, her baby brother killed, and her mother kidnapped, Rose knew that God was with her and saw evidence of His faithfulness in the small things. As the struggle to survive got tougher, her spirit grew stronger. In the end, World War II proved to be no match for this courageous little girl from Austria.

A little gem of a memoir... The book adds up to more than a sum of its parts and lingers in the memory long after the final page. -- Sunday Telegraph Half a million people a day do it in the Telegraph. The Times claims almost as many, and the Guardian 300,000. Most people remember their first time, and everyone has a favourite. You can do it in bed, standing up, or on a train. You can do it alone, with a loved one or in groups. The Queen does it in the bath. It is not illegal, immoral or fattening. In fact it tops the Home Office list of approved entertainments for prison inmates. Crosswords are a very British obsession. Crosswords are a very British obsession. Each chapter is starts with a clue, and uses anecdote, history and autobiography to solve it, in the process describing something of what it means to love England. In the process, we encounter The Best Crossword Clue Ever, The Most Beautiful Clue in the World 'Pretty Girl in Crimson Rose' and the eccentric personalities behind such legendary compilers as the Guardian's Araucaria and The Times'Ximenes.
