This text is intended for use as an advanced course in either rotordynamics or vibration at the graduate level. This text has mostly grown out of the research work in my laboratory and the lectures given to graduate students in the Mechanical Engineering Department, KAIST. The text contains a variety of topics not normally found in rotordynamics or vibration textbooks. The text emphasizes the analytical aspects and is thus quite different from conventional rotordynamics texts; potential readers are expected to have a firm background in elementary rotordynamics and vibration. In most previously published rotordynamics texts, the behavior of simple rotors has been of a primary concern, while more realistic, multi-degree-f-freedom or continuous systems are seldom treated in a rigorous way, mostly due to the difficulty of a mathematical treatment of such complicated systems. When one wanted to gain a deep insight into dynamic phenomena of complicated rotor systems, one has, in the past, either had to rely on computational techniques, such as the transfer matrix and finite element methods, or cautiously to extend ideas learned from simple rotors whose analytical solutions are readily available. The former methods are limited in the interpretation of results, since the calculations relate only to the simulated case, not to more general system behavior. Ideas learned from simple rotors can, fortunately, often be extended to many practical rotor systems, but there is of course no guarantee of their validity.

Rotordynamics are of great importance in the design, manufacture and assembly of turbomachines as well as in ensuring their safe operation. Also important are the dynamics of the foundation and its interaction with the dynamics of the rotor. This book is divided into four parts. Following a presentation of the basic theory the dynamics of rotors supported on several bearings. The third part describes the dynamics of foundations of turbine line-outs and the calculations for a turbomachine coupled with its foundation. The last part includes a section on estimation procedures, a comprehensive presentation of the theoryand practice of rotors having a transverse crack, a section on the mathematical fundamentals and a description of the computer program used for the examples in the book. The book addresses both the practical engineer and the theoretician and should provide manufacturers, operators, university and polytechnic lecturers and students with an understanding of the vibrations of turbomachines. The results are described in such a way that they can be easily understood and applied.

Aeroelastic Considerations For Torsionally Soft Rotors written by Wayne R. Mantay and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1986 with categories.

A research study was initiated to systematically determine the impact of selected blade tip geometric parameters on conformable rotor performance and loads characteristics. The model articulated rotors included baseline and torsionally soft blades with interchangeable tips. Seven blade tip designs were evaluated on the baseline rotor and six tip designs were tested on the torsionally soft blades. The designs incorporated a systemmatic variation in geometric parameters including sweep, taper, and anhedral. The rotors were evaluated in the NASA Langley Transonic Dynamics Tunnel at several advance ratios, lift and propulsive force values, and tip Mach numbers. A track sensitivity study was also conducted at several advance ratios for both rotors. Based on the test results, tip parameter variations generated significant rotor performance and loads differences for both baseline and torsionally soft blades. Azimuthal variation of elastic twist generated by variations in the tip parameters strongly correlated with rotor performance and loads, but the magnitude of advancing blade elastic twist did not. In addition, fixed system vibratory loads and rotor track for potential conformable rotor candidates appears very sensitive to parametric rotor changes. (Author).

Helicopter Type Rotor Decelerators written by R. R. Tyndall and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1963 with Rotors (Helicopters) categories.

Helicoptr-type rotors appear attractive for the deceleration, trajectory control, gliding descent and final recovery of almost all types of aero space payloads. The potential of rotors is based upon (1) their inherent virtues of L/D gliding capability, controllability, and soft, flared landing; (2) past experience with uncontrolled rotor-decelerated air-dropped stores; and (3) helicopters having the capabilities of control, autorotation, and flare-out to land. Aero nautical Systems Division, as well as other Government agencies, believes that rotor decelerators have potential, particularly in light of the desired expansion of limited war capability, and is conducting applied research to explore the basic feasibility of using rotors for aerospace payload recovery. This effort involves both wind tunnel testing in the transonic-super sonic range, and free-flight testing at deployment speeds up to Mach 0.9 and analyses. To date, wind tunnel tests have demonstrated the deployment, operating, and drag characteristics of an eight-foot diameter rotor decelerator through a Mach number range from 0.5 to 1.5. Analyses have indicated that rotors, as well as providing subsonic performance capability, may have potential as hypersonic glide and drag devices. Thus, rotor decelerator potential embraces the spectrum ranging from relatively low-speed aerial delivery of payloads to suborbital and orbital space vehicle recovery. (Author).

Cracked Rotors written by Nicoló Bachschmid and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-07-12 with Science categories.

Cracks can develop in rotating shafts and can propagate to relevant depths without affecting consistently the normal operating conditions of the shaft. In order to avoid catastrophic failures, accurate vibration analyses have to be performed for crack detection. The identification of the crack location and depth is possible by means of a model based diagnostic approach, provided that the model of the crack and the model of the cracked shaft dynamical behavior are accurate and reliable. This monograph shows the typical dynamical behavior of cracked shafts and presents tests for detecting cracks. The book describes how to model cracks, how to simulate the dynamical behavior of cracked shaft, and compares the corresponding numerical with experimental results. All effects of cracks on the vibrations of rotating shafts are analyzed, and some results of a numerical sensitivity analysis of the vibrations to the presence and severity of the crack are shown. Finally the book describes some crack identification procedures and shows some results in model based crack identification in position and depth. The book is useful for higher university courses in mechanical and energetic engineering, but also for skilled technical people employed in power generation industries.

Requirements on high efficiency of rotating machinery forces engineers to deal with problems of self-induced vi brations and balancing of rotors in a serious and scientific manner. The last decade has shown a leap towards the solution of advanced problems of this kind as indicated by the large amount of scientific and engineering papers on rotor dynamics published in international journals. In appreciation of this situation the General Assembly of the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mecha nics (IUTAM) at its meeting in Moscow in 1972, acting on a proposal by the Danish Adhering Organization, decided to sponsor an international symposium on the "Dynamics of Rotors" . The scientific planning of the symposium was handed by a scientific committee, consisting of Prof. R.E.D. BISHOP, UK, Prof. S.H. CRANDALL, USA, Prof. F.M. DIMENTBERG, USSR, Dr. A. TONDL, CSSR, Prof. H. ZIEGLER, Switzerland and Prof. F.I. NIORDSON, Denmark, (Chairman). This committee was charged with the selection and invitation of a small number of outstanding scientists in the field, whose contributions to the symposium are presented in this volume. Participation was restricted to invited scientists and there were 87 active participants from 18 countries. Apart from a financial contribution from IUTAM to sup port travel and subsistence of invited participants, generous contributions were received from the following Danish Companies: Burmeister & Wain, Danfoss, The Danish Sugar corporation, DISA, Elsinore Shipbuilding Engineer, Kyndby v~rket, Niro Atomizer, and the Swedish Company STAL-LAVAL. The contributions are gratefully acknowledged.
