Rubens is undoubtedly the most influential Flemish painter. Through reproductions in print, his compositions had an immense impact, even during his lifetime. Himself indebted to Titian, Rubens became a role model to Van Dyck, Rembrandt and Velázquez, and influenced artists well beyond his time, including figures such as Cézanne, Picasso, Bacon and Freud. This stunning new volume explores Rubenss legacy thematically, through a series of sections devoted to Violence, Power, Lust, Compassion, Elegance and Poetry. Illustrating some of the artists most famous paintings alongside great works that bear his influence, each section will link artists across the centuries in their references to Rubens, from Van Dyck and Watteau to Manet, Daumier, Renoir and Van Gogh, as well as Gainsborough, Constable and Turner.--

Lived experience is a critical ingredient in the creation of artistic production. Without it, art would indeed be dull and would lack the ability to connect with the viewer, due to the unrealistic presentation of the scene. This paper looks at the acclaimed Life Cycle of Marie de' Medici by Peter Paul Rubens and applies an autobiographical approach in reading the paintings. Rubens' life experiences, including an undeniably substantial influence from his mother and her life, are predominantly present in this series. In making this twenty-four-image cycle, Rubens was intuitively aware that the reaction provoked by these paintings would influence the view of the French people about the Queen Mother, Marie de' Medici. Based upon an in depth analysis between the paintings and biography, it is astonishing how closely linked the Life Cycle of Marie de' Medici is with the life of Rubens and his mother, Maria. This thesis concentrates on the close connection between the artist and his own mother, which is translated into the inspiration behind this series of paintings. While there does appear to be some correlations between certain specific events in the life of Marie de' Medici and Rubens' mother, the focus for this thesis has been looking at Rubens' mother as the inspirational spirit behind the depictions in this cycle and how this influence contributes to the overall theme of triumph over adversity.

Painter, collector, diplomat, linguist and scholar, Rubens was one of the most successful and influential artists of all time. Internationally renowned and revered in his day, his immensely varied output is all too often eclipsed by his reputation as the painter par excellence of the voluptuous nude. However, this master of Baroque theatricality was acclaimed for his powerful religious altarpieces and his large-scale commissions for the courts of Europe, and could also turn his hand to small, privately executed landscapes and intimate portraits of family and friends. Putting into context Rubens's absolutist politics and Catholic rhetoric, Lawson reveals how his painterly style and profound understanding of color, rhythm, scale and space have transcended his own times and circumstances. Anyone at all interested in painting cannot afford to overlook his legacy and Lawson suggests that the time is ripe for a fresh look at this Old Master.

The eclectic art of which the Carracci family dreamed was realised by Rubens with the ease of genius. However, the problem was much more complicated for a man of the north, who wished to add to it a fusion of the Flemish and Latin spirits, of which the rather pedantic attempts of Romanism had illustrated the difficulties. He achieved it without losing anything of his overflowing personality, his questing imagination, and the enchanting discoveries of the greatest colourist known to painting. Rubens, the greatest master of Baroque painting’s exuberance, took from the Italian Renaissance what could be of use to him, and then built upon it a style of his own. It is distinguished by a wonderful mastery of the human form and an amazing wealth of splendidly lighted colour. He was a man of much intellectual poise and was accustomed to court life, travelling from court to court, with pomp, as a trusted envoy. Rubens was one of those rare mortals who do real honour to humanity. He was handsome, good and generous, and he loved virtue. His laborious life was well ordered. The creator of so many delightful pagan feasts went each morning to mass before proceeding to his studio. He was the most illustrious type of happy and perfectly balanced genius, and combined in his personage passion and science, ardour and reflection. Rubens expressed drama as well as joy, since nothing human was foreign to him, and he could command at will the pathos of colour and expression which he required in his religious masterpieces. It might be said that he was as prolific in the representation of the joy and exuberance of life as Michelangelo was in the representation of passionate emotions.

This book is about the Booker Prize - the London-based literary award made annually to "the best novel written in English" by a writer from one of those countries belonging to, or formerly part of, the British Commonwealth. The approach to the Prize is thematically historical and spans the award period to 1999. The novels that have won or shared the Prize in this period are examined within a theoretical framework mapping the literary terrain of the fiction. Individual chapters explore themes that occur within the larger narrative formed by this body of novels - collectively invoked cultures, social trends and movements spanning the stages of imperial heyday and decline as perceived over the past three decades. Individually and collectively, the novels mirror, often in terms of more than a single static image, British imperial culture after empire, contesting and reinterpreting perceptions of the historical moment of the British Empire and its legacy in contemporary culture. The body of Booker novels narrates the demise of empire and the emergence of different cultural formations in its aftermath. The novels are grouped for discussion according to the way in which they deal with aspects of the transition from empire to a post-imperial culture - from early imperial expansion, through colonization, retrenchment, decolonization and postcolonial pessimism, to the emergence of tribal nationalisms and post-imperial nation-states. The focus throughout is primarily literary and contingently cultural.
