Nazi Germany threw its might against Russia: 5,000,000 men took part in the blitz attack along the Russian frontier. From interviews and primary evidence, much of it never previously published, unfolds the story of the Eastern Front, interweaving accounts of the men and women who served with the progress of the war itself. When the Great Patriotic War began many women volunteered for the armed forces, but most of them were rejected. They were steered towards nursing or other supportive roles. Many determined women managed to enter combat by first volunteering as field medics and nurses, then simply picking up a gun during the battle, and charging boldly into the line of fire. In the area of aviation, women also contributed greatly to the war effort. In rickety biplanes, they flew bombing missions at night, without parachutes; their only protection was the darkness. This book tells the stories of the brave women that were awarded the Soviet Union's most prestigious title Hero of the Soviet Union for their bravery in protecting their homeland.

This book contains some of the greatest stories of wartime heroism, many now recorded here for the first time in the West. The heroes are Russian men and women fighting and dying for their country that has been treacherously attacked by Hitler's Germany. At that time it possessed the most powerful and ruthless army the world had ever seen. Facing the enemy was an 18-year-old women sniper - a hefty Red Army marine called her "a dragonfly" because she was so slight. But she managed to dispatch over 300 enemy troops. Later she was invited to visit America by Eleanor Roosevelt, the President's wife. She was also invited to visit wartime Great Britain. One chapter tells of hero-poet Mussa Jalil who joined the Soviet army in 1942 and, fighting at the front lines, was wounded and then captured, imprisoned, tortured and guillotined. In three years as a POW he wrote over 100 poems, many of them with unsurpassed depth of feeling, evoking the poet's limitless courage and love for his Motherland. The author met some of the heroes in this book. One of them, a woman pilot flew almost 1,000 missions over enemy lines, at night, in a small wooden, open-cockpit plane with a top speed of under 130 mph. She told the author that once when she was on a bombing mission, one of the bombs did not release and she had to lean out of the cockpit on a very cold night and release the bomb with her freezing fingers. The final chapter is a story of pure humanism. A decorated Russian pilot seeing an enemy who can be easily destroyed holds his fire and saves the life of the German. Some years after the war they have a prearranged meeting in a cafe in Germany. The story behind the story is revealed.

A Writer At War written by Vasily Grossman and has been published by Vintage this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-12-18 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

When the Germans invaded Russia in 1941, Vasily Grossman became a special correspondent for the Red Star, the Soviet Army's newspaper, and reported from the frontlines of the war. A Writer at War depicts in vivid detail the crushing conditions on the Eastern Front, and the lives and deaths of soldiers and civilians alike. Witnessing some of the most savage fighting of the war, Grossman saw firsthand the repeated early defeats of the Red Army, the brutal street fighting in Stalingrad, the Battle of Kursk (the largest tank engagement in history), the defense of Moscow, the battles in Ukraine, the atrocities at Treblinka, and much more. Antony Beevor and Luba Vinogradova have taken Grossman's raw notebooks, and fashioned them into a gripping narrative providing one of the most even-handed descriptions --at once unflinching and sensitive -- we have ever had of what Grossman called “the ruthless truth of war.”

Red Star Airacobra written by Evgeniy Mariinskiy and has been published by Helion & Company Limited this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

Evgeniy Mariinskiy, a Soviet fighter ace and Hero of the Soviet Union, shot down 20 enemy planes in aerial combat over the Eastern Front between 1943 and 1945. He frequently engaged enemy fighters and bombers, shot down many but was himself shot down several times. This is his extraordinary story. His vivid inside view of the ruthless war in the air on the Eastern Front gives a rare insight into the reality of fighting and tactics of the Red Army Air Force. In his own words, and with a remarkable clarity of recall, Evgeniy Mariinskiy describes what combat was like in the air, face to face with a skilled, deadly and increasingly desperate enemy. The reader can follow his career from an unskilled novice who has just arrived at his regiment through to him becoming an ace, and Hero of the Soviet Union, under the leadership of experienced commanders. The terrifying moments of action, engagements with enemy fighters, forced landings, nervous strain before attacks, loss of comrades and everyday life of pilots - all these aspects of a Soviet fighter pilot's experience during the Great Patriotic War are brought dramatically to life in his memoirs. In his memoirs Mariinskiy describes tactics which enabled him to have an upper hand in dogfights against experienced German pilots. The grand strategy of the campaigns across the Eastern Front is less important here than the sequence of engagements that were the firsthand experience of the author. It is this close-up view of combat that makes Evgeniy Mariinskiy's reminiscences of such value. Key sales points: A gripping and superbly readable memoir of the war in the air over the Eastern Front 1943-45, penned by a Hero of the Soviet Union and air ace credited with 20 victories / Covers the author's full aviation career including training and his initial experiences over the front, as well as his increasingly successful combat with a skilled enemy / Evgeniy Mariinskiy served with the 129th Guards Fighter Regiment 1943-45, undertaking 210 sorties, participating in 60 air-to-air engagements and shooting down 20 enemy aircraft. In 1945 he was awarded the Gold Star of Hero of the Soviet Union.
