Band 24 enthält sämtliche bekannten Briefe und amtlichen Dokumente aus dem Zeitraum seiner Dienstzeit als Direktor des Seminars für Stadtschullehrer in Berlin bis hin zu seiner Amtsniederlegung (1832–1847). Die amtlichen Schreiben dokumentieren Diesterwegs Ringen um eine zeitgemäße Gestaltung der Seminarausbildung, u.a. seine kritische Position zum engen Verhältnis von Schule und Kirche. Anhand der Schreiben und der in den Erläuterungen ausführlich wiedergegebenen Korrespondenz seiner Dienstvorgesetzten lässt sich außerdem verfolgen, wie aus dem einst hochgeschätzten Seminardirektor allmählich ein in konservativen Kreisen unliebsamer Beamter wurde und mit welchen Mitteln man ihn aus dem Amt zu drängen suchte. In den privaten Schreiben an Familienangehörige, Lehrer und Schriftsteller bekommen Diesterwegs Positionen und seine Reaktion auf die gegen ihn ergriffenen Maßnahmen ein noch schärferes und zugleich intimeres Gesicht. Sie geben aber auch Einblicke in Diesterwegs väterliche Sorge um die Nöte der herangewachsenen Kinder. Zugleich zeichnet er bei Berichten aus der Kur und von geselligen Unternehmungen ein hellsichtig-interessantes Bild vom gesellschaftlichen Leben seiner Zeit.
