L'acte de «prendre soin» est sans doute l'un des plus vieux gestes effectué envers l'autre. Avec lui, l'altérité et l'identité interagissent et se transforment, chez le soigné comme chez le soignant. Selon les époques, les pays et les cultures, il prend différents visages. Au-delà de la santé et du bien-être, il convient d'élargir le champ du prendre soin aux diverses dimensions du soin, dont l'idée même permet d'appréhender, dans leur unité et dans leur diversité, une variété de situations allant des actes les plus ponctuels aux enjeux éthiques, politiques et prospectifs les plus vastes. Face à l'allongement de la vie, face aux vulnérabilités qui affectent des personnes en situations de précarité, au regard des risques écologiques pesant sur la planète, les savoir et les pratiques du «prendre soin» doivent être réinterrogés afin que l'on puisse déterminer à quelles conditions ils pourront devenir des compétences clefs pour un monde plus durable et plus solidaire. C'est au regard de ces préoccupations que s'est tenu, en juin 2010, le colloque de Cerisy «Prendre soin: savoirs, pratiques, nouvelles perspectives». Au cours de ce colloque franco-québécois, des philosophes, des chercheurs dans le domaine de la santé et des sciences humaines, des praticiens ainsi que des experts des politiques publiques se sont intéressés à l'évolution du «prendre soin» et aux savoirs qui le composent et le définissent. Cet ouvrage réunit les contributions émanant de ce colloque autour des thèmes principaux qui ont été abordés au cours de la décade.

Ellen Rosand shows how opera, born of courtly entertainment, took root in the special social and economic environment of seventeenth-century Venice and there developed the stylistic and aesthetic characteristics we recognize as opera today. With ninety-one music examples, most of them complete pieces nowhere else in print, and enlivened by twenty-eight illustrations, this landmark study will be essential for all students of opera, amateur and professional, and for students of European cultural history in general. Because opera was new in the seventeenth century, the composers (most notably Monteverdi and Cavalli), librettists, impresarios, singers, and designers were especially aware of dealing with aesthetic issues as they worked. Rosand examines critically for the first time the voluminous literary and musical documentation left by the Venetian makers of opera. She determines how these pioneers viewed their art and explains the mechanics of the proliferation of opera, within only four decades, to stages across Europe. Rosand isolates two features of particular importance to this proliferation: the emergence of conventions—musical, dramatic, practical—that facilitated replication; and the acute self-consciousness of the creators who, in their scores, librettos, letters, and other documents, have left us a running commentary on the origins of a genre.
