Saint Helena is an isolated volcanic island in the South Atlantic Ocean, located approximately 1,200 miles west of the coast of Africa. The island was discovered by the Portuguese in 1502 and was later occupied by the British in 1659, becoming an important British outpost during the 19th century. Saint Helena is known for being the final resting place of the exiled Napoleon Bonaparte, who was exiled on the island from 1815 until his death in 1821. Today, the island is a British Overseas Territory with a population of approximately 4,000 inhabitants. Despite its remote location, Saint Helena has a rich history and culture. The island's isolation has contributed to the development of a distinct culture and language known as "Saints English", which is a mixture of English, Portuguese, and African dialects. In addition to Napoleon's tomb, the island is also home to a number of historic landmarks, including the Jacob's Ladder staircase, which has 699 steps, and the 16th century Plantation House, which serves as the residence of the island's governor. Today, Saint Helena's economy is largely dependent on tourism, as visitors come to explore the island's natural beauty and rich history.

Expanded-language texts for references to God General softening of language to avoid masculine nouns and images in Psalms and other texts Can be used by clergy and lay people, across denominations, who are looking for a daily regimen of prayer and Bible reading Special appeal to women and men who are sensitive to issues of inclusive language Offers the full beauty of structured monastic prayer in the Anglican tradition Designed for use with the Bible, in a translation of personal choice Can also be used as a manual of devotion without Bible readings The rich tradition of monastic prayer, dating back to the earliest days of the desert hermits in the third century, has been the foundational daily prayer of the Church for most of its existence. Many individuals who are not members of religious communities cherish this tradition and use elements of it for their own daily prayer, and adapted breviaries have been popular sellers to targeted markets for more than a century. Over the past several years, the Order of Saint Helena, a community of women in the Episcopal Church, spent a great deal of time and energy in revising their office book. High on the list of priorities for the revision was the broadening of language to avoid masculine imagery when referring to God. This personal edition of The Saint Helena Breviary has been adapted for use by individual readers who set aside one or more times for prayer in the midst of their busy lives. A history of St Helena, which is an account of Britain's most remote and second oldest colony. Everyone has heard of St Helena, but nobody knows much about it. This suits most of its inhabitants just fine. Unfortunately it does not suit its remote rulers in London, who think it costs too much and ideally should be made to earn money for them. It is still a mini-colony in the time when these stories are set, complete with a Governor with feathers on his hat. The locals just want to get on with their lives. But money is short and many of them are forced to leave, sometimes forever. These stories are mostly a light-hearted look at life on this tiny island. They have an airport now, but these are tales of life in earlier times that will soon seem very remote, a peep into a way of life that will soon be forgotten. There are some marvellous local characters with all their problems and peccadilloes, the good and not-so-good officials sent out from London to try and run the place. There is also the unwanted official visitor when it is sensed that the remote control from afar is not as effective as it might be. And the assorted mercenaries, missionaries and misfits who briefly appear in their lives. As in all small places there are endless opportunities to scheme and manoeuvre to achieve their respective ends.

Rugged, volcanic and very remote, the three tiny islands of St Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha dot the South Atlantic like so many bits of flotsam. As Napoleon's place of exile following the Battle of Waterloo, St Helena has gained a notoriety that assures its place in the travel lexicon. This fully revised edition includes information on St Helena's new airport, which makes it possible for the first time for visitors to explore the island's natural and historic attractions without a five-day sea voyage to get here. Hiking, fishing, snorkelling and diving are included, plus details of marine wildlife, from whale sharks and dolphins to groupers and soldier fish. Expert author Tricia Hayne also provides a section on '24 hours in Cape Town', offering a brief overview of what to see and do with a day between voyages.
