With a 27.8 % prevalence of mental disorders and only 0.6 psychiatrists per 100,000 people (96% based in Guatemala City), access to mental healthcare in rural areas is limited. u00b7 Materials and methodsALAS provides Access to Care through free consultations, treatment, and support to underprivileged families. ALAS Fights Against Stigma by disseminating information and educating populations to reduce discrimination. ALAS Trains physicians and healthcare professionals on mental disorders. Finally, ALAS helps to Rehabilitate & Empower patients, teaching them how to recover their independence and productivity, as well as how to manage their rights ResultsIn 2018, the following results were achievedAccess to care: 660 clinic consultations for 477 patients & 110 home visits for 42 severely ill patientsFight against Stigma: 13 workshops involving 446 elementary teachers & adults, 8 workshops involving 934 children & teenagers, 19 TV programs (local & YouTube), Training & Education: there have now been 40 families who have been looked after by trained GPs Rehabilitation & empowerment: 13 x self-help group sessions held for 330 participants , Volunteering: collaboration with Stanford University (Psychiatry residents), Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala, 3 homes built by CONSTRUCASAConclusions:ALAS Pro Salud Mental is the first, and only non-profit organization in Guatemala dedicated to mental health access.
