In this interdisciplinary study, Sandro Botticelli's famous Renaissance masterpiece Primavera is analyzed iconographically to demonstrate the possibility that it represents a deliberate and considered attempt on the part of the artist to set forth in artistic terms a Neoplatonic quadripartite «programme» provided by Marsilio Ficino. Beneath the surface inspirations of myth, poetry and legend represented in terms of easily recognizable gods and goddesses, there appears to be an allegorical framework on which the artistic programme was built. This innovate research of the Primavera will make a contribution not only to the field of Italian Renaissance art history, but also to the fields of comparative literature, philosopy, history and religion.

Jahrhunderts datiert und gilt als ein Höhepunkt der Florentinischen Renaissance Malerei. Renaissance kommt aus dem Französischen und kann übersetzt werden mit: "Wiedergeburt der Künste". Diese Kunst war von der Suche nach Neuerungen geprägt, zu denen unter anderem auch das Aufkommen mythologischer Bilder gehörte. Die Darstellungen orientieren sich an Geschichten aus vorchristlicher Zeit, in denen vom Leben der Götter und Helden und von ihrem Verhältnis zueinander die Rede ist . Für die Menschen war die Mythologie der bewunderten Griechen und Römer wesentlich mehr als eine Sammlung von heiteren, gefälligen Märchen. Sie waren so von der überlegenen Weisheit des Altertums durchdrungen, dass sie meinten, in diesen antiken Sagen müsse eine tiefe, geheimnisvolle Wahrheit verborgen sein . Die Künstler begaben sich mit dieser Art von Malerei auf ein neues Gebiet, denn für die Darstellung mythologischer Geschichten oder Personen gab es bisher kaum Vorbilder. Aufgrund der langjährigen Unklarheit über die genaue Datierung der "Primavera" und die damit verbundenen möglichen Unterschiede in der Entstehungsgeschichte ist sie wie kaum ein anderes Gemälde immer wieder neu interpretiert worden. Im folgenden werde ich auf verschiedenen Interpretationsmodelle eingehen und sie weiter erläutern.

Alessandro di Mariano di Vanni Filipepi, better known as simply Sandro Botticelli, was born in Florence, Italy, probably in or around 1445. Serendipitously winning a high-profile commission from the Florentine court, he was catapulted to notoriety as wealthy patrons, in particular the Medici family, hired him to create works that celebrated their lives and their familyÍs lives and marked important events such as weddings. BotticelliÍs range was wide: he embellished the walls of the Sistine Chapel with three frescoes, illustrated DanteÍs The Divine Comedy (just under100 drawings still exist), and painted both mythological and religious scenesPrimavera and The Birth of Venus, and Adoration of the Magi, being respective examples of his excellence in the genre. Botticelli never wed, possibly due to his unrequited love for the married Simonetta Cattaneo Vespucci, who died very young. By the end of 15th century, Botticelli came to believe that Humanisma philosophy embraced by the Medici familywas amoral. His reaction was to burn many of his paintings and thereafter to produce only religious-themed works.

Widely acknowledged as a prime manifestation of Florentine humanist culture under Lorenzo de'Medici, Botticelli's "Primavera" cannot be fully interpreted without considering the poetics that expressed the Laurentian cultural program and, in turn, the Renaissance itself. In this analysis Charles Dempsey examines the poetry written by Lorenzo and his literary clients in order to give definition to the cultural context in which the "Primavera" was created. A celebration of Love, the painting is shown to incorporate both public and private imaginative realms while embracing the ideal and the actual experiences of the present. The "Primavera," depicting Venus as the spirit of Love and springtime, is simultaneously old-fashioned and modern, rooted in International-Style vernacular conventions and evincing a nascent classical vocabulary. After describing the profoundly humanist classical foundation of the invention of the "Primavera," Dempsey identifies its genre with rustic song, then relates the painting to the conventions of vernacular love poetry. A close reading of the painting in relation to works by Lorenzo, Politian, Pulci, and other poets working to elevate vernacular expression by infusing native Tuscan with Latin forms suggests how the idea of Love portrayed by Botticelli in the form of Venus incorporates not only the ancient springtime "renovatio mundi" but also the actual cultural renovation--the Renaissance--imagined and sponsored by Lorenzo the Magnificent.
